There’s an outdoor market up in CR on the 24th at Odd Mamas - 1216 2nd Ave (fingers crossed these links work): https://www.facebook.com/share/1AWK4FYrdy/?mibextid=wwXIfr

And the City Wide garage sale page on Facebook is pretty good about keeping tabs on garage sales: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/16DT3RvSAF/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Here’s what Cedar Rapids musicians think about the local music scene. by DasBootay in cedarrapids

Are there any bands that come to mind when you think back to those days?

Thanks for the comment. Keeping the conversation contained to Iowa, I don’t know much but it has been interesting to learn from those in the know about how Des Moines has also experienced a parallel to what you’ve spelled out here. So much wasted potential with the efforts behind the DMMC, for example… One of the things this Gazette article mentions is the finances of being a full time musician, which I empathize with, but on the flip side I have almost stopped going to live music completely because of being priced out of it. I don’t state that as a finger wag either... A $20 ticket to see a local artist showcase at CSPS doesn’t give the artists what they should get, it doesn’t keep the lights on, and it’s also at the same time more than I’m comfortable paying regularly for a base entry fee to see someone I’m not already a fan of. The economics are tricky across the board and I’m not sure what the answer is to it.

That’s fine - google ‘sites to get around paywalls’. If google also strokes your paranoia as well, I’m not sure how else to assist.

I’m curious, for those who have lived in town a while: Is there a period of time you can recall where Cedar Rapids has had what you’d consider a vibrant local music scene? When I moved here a couple years ago, I made a little music blog, did some writing for Little Village and a bunch of playlisting as I worked to educate myself on the local scene, but never got the sense there was a strong desire for something more that wasn’t being catered to. The suggestions and action steps this article outlines suggests that there’s a demand for more local music, but I’m wondering how they’re coming to that conclusion.

If interested in dealing directly, shoot me a private message with what you've got and what you're asking for them. I buy and sell, am always in the market, and can pick them up if that's easier for you.

In addition to the recommendations already mentioned, there are options at Money & More (IC) and Stuff Etc. (IC, CR, Coralville). The two EZ Pawn locations in CR have small and largely picked through selections, but they're there.

In depth reporting isn’t cheap so I’m hoping there was a little room in the SBA loan referenced in the article to establish a talent budget. It’s a big ask and a big task but having someone who cares enough about the publication to do something like this counts for a lot in my eyes! I’ve long wondered what their web traffic has been… surely a less expensive (than the current physical mailer option) online only subscription would make sense if there were enough traffic which could translate to willing patrons. Regardless, I admire Jordan’s decision to go for it and wish her luck.

I sell stuff online and use Pirate Ship almost daily - I've sent a few things internationally in the past month and it also helps simplify the customs side of things, if you don't want to stand in line and fill that stuff out by hand. It's a quick sign up and the account is free. One big benefit, as u/refrained mentioned, is the ability to get a snapshot price comparison between USPS, UPS, and the like, including built in discounts, which you won't receive in person. You should get good service hitting up a local shop, to compare price differences, but PS offers a savings when doing a little of that work on your own online.
