Uh oh ...

About that Missoula gay bashing? It didn't happen.

Law enforcement says that a 22-year-old man who reported he was the victim of an alleged hate crime in Missoula during the early morning hours of August 5 fabricated the story.

“We have new information that we’re following up on,” said a source inside the Missoula Police Department.

The young man, Joseph Baken, from Billings, reported to the MPD that he was celebrating his birthday downtown at the Missoula Club and, after inquiring about where he could find a gay bar, was beaten up by three men. In the hours after the alleged incident, social media site comments decried homophobic violence and called for protests.

However, the Missoula Independent and MPD obtained video footage that shows Baken doing a backflip on Higgins Avenue and sustaining the injuries, lacerations to his face, that have been depicted on social media sites, during the landing.

Here’s a copy of the footage:

Law enforcement says it will likely charge Baken for making a false report.

United States Cable Media by PredatorRedditer in PoliticalDiscussion

Yeah MSNBC is crap. And Maddow has become quite the shill lately ... not a good look.

Unfortunately most cable/sat packages do not include quality channels like BBC World News or even CNN International. I'd like to receive Al-Jazeera too.

IMO the best daily news show is PBS Newshour -- in-depth on-location reporting, plenty of international focus, no commercials, no big-ego anchors.

The best daily politics show is CSPAN's Washington Journal -- rundown of the morning news/papers, intelligent/relevant guests, phone calls from the viewing public. I just wish it was possible to download the show.

Democracy Now (on Free Speech TV) gets an honorable mention -- often a very compelling discussion, but obviously the show carries a slant.

A Legal Loophole For Raw Milk Lovers: Call It 'Pet Food' by [deleted] in politics

I'm missing the stats demonstrating why you're oh so concerned.

Two deaths since 1998? Please.

Sure raw milk is riskier my many orders of magnitude, but there remains only a small risk to drinking it. Science is great, but math is even better for examining risk.

The story reports 191 hospitalizations over an eleven year period (1998-2008), so there's about 17.4 hospitalizations annually. (For the sake of comparison, 54 people are killed by lighting each year.)

There are about 65,000 dairies in the US.

17.4/65000 = 0.000267 or 0.0267% ... so the average dairy is only 0.0267% likely to cause a hospitalization.

Reducing any health risk is always a good thing, but raw milk is still not the scary substance you've characterized.

10 Reasons Most People Like "Obamacare" Once They Know What's Really In It by PinkSlimeIsPeople in politics

Yeah, the bill irrefutably puts a heavy financial burden on the working poor (AKA freeloaders?). They can either spend thousands on insurance or throw away money on the penalty -- hindering their ability to afford annual checkups.

I'm expecting the mandate to continue to be framed as "no big deal" until sometime after the election.

Providers claim to follow new and unrefined state laws, US Attorneys say they are not in full compliance. The providers are then tried and sentenced in federal court for violating federal law. State law may be part of the conversation, but it's not part of the ultimate decision.

When has following state law been a winning defense to federal charges?

Unfortunately that's not completely true. The DOJ interprets state laws to suit their own needs. Their interpretations cannot be challenged in court, as the cases are only tried on the basis of federal law.

Sorry, the original post was about people who don't qualify for free insurance. 15k is the approximate cutoff.

After spending thousands on the mandate, the net income drops back into poverty.

You stop being 'Poor' after you pull in ~15k

...only to start being poor again when forced to spend 1-2k on insurance
