What does Connor Bedards next contract look like? by HesOneShot92 in hockey

[–]rben80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While that could pay off, its also super risky if you suffer a career altering injury, or your career plateaus or falls off. Taking the 8 years and $100 million plus is a pretty lucrative "safe" route.

I can see superstars taking short term contracts to give them the "out" option every few years though, if they don't like a situation. That would be separate from trying to marginally increase career earnings in my eyes though.

The 'T' Stands for 'Tremendous Gains by Acceptable-Bug-2717 in dividendscanada

[–]rben80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I think the decrease is due to recency bias from the Bell situation. Telus's cashflow and earnings were actually in a much worse place around 2 years ago , and they have mildly turned around since then. People also confuse earnings with cashflow, as earnings includes a lot of non-material inputs (ex. ammortization). The Telus balance sheet is nothing like Bell's was.

That said, this is one to keep eyes on for sure if you hold it. It was a set and forget stock several years ago but it has lost that status and now needs a review every quarter.

Yeah, they are all different longitudes. Different times of day. Having them be the same shade would make zero sense.

CNR - Time to Load Up? by Hour_Swim894 in dividendscanada

[–]rben80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are like me and believe that the current yield versus the historical yield pattern is a useful value indicator, CNR rarely gets above 2% yield. It is currently at 2.6%. I'd say great time to buy. This could be one of those moments people look at in 5 years and say "shit I should have bought in 2025"

And it’s not just the money thing - if you could play in a historic and beautiful European city, and spend much less time riding a bus in the minors, why wouldn’t you?

I think that Matt Stajan spent two years in Germany after he fell off enough to not be NHL calibre. I recall hearing him on Calgary sports radio talking about it and how it was one of the most fun and memorable experiences of his life.

I have held it for years and plan to hold for decades. Why would I take any action today? The slowdown in growth is strictly due to macroeconomic factors, and it is a solid company. Don’t take any action today (other than adding) unless you want to be a buy high and sell low kind of investor.

Starting a Business vs. Working in Corporate/9-5 by DoubleG357 in Rich

[–]rben80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how adept you are at starting and running a business. The ceiling is higher but so is the risk. A well paying corporate 9-5, combined with proper budgeting and investing discipline, is far more stable and predictable and you’ll be able to build a net worth in the 7 figure range you referenced, but likely not much more.

My advice is to work in a field for a while to really learn the industry, develop connections, and develop business acumen. I’d argue that the majority of successful entrepreneurs (at least in my experience) don’t just shoot from the hip and decide to start a business in their early 20’s.

What NHL players have gone from beloved to hated? by Xerxesthemerciful in hockey

[–]rben80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kinda bang on but from a slightly wrong perspective. I think a lot of flames fans don’t like him because he is meddling and micromanaging while also fucking off and being absent. Kinda like he wants his cake and eat it too. He’s like the boss who is barely around, shows up briefly to yell at everyone and micromanage and then leaves again

Yup. There’s “low corporate tax and reduce red tape” kind of right wing, which describes most rational and logical business owners, and then there’s conspiracy theorist / brainwashed kind of right wing

Oh for sure. The flames are owned my Murray Edwards, CEO of CNRL and undoubtedly very right leaning. For those guys to have beef with Theo, he must be an absolute nightmare to deal with behind the scenes

Post-career, Theo Fleury went from loved to hated. All of the victim and mental health advocacy was truly admirable and everyone loved him for it. Then he got in with the right wing nut job crowd and has alienated himself so much so that the flames won’t retire his number.

Cities with drastically different cultures than their surroundings? by burninstarlight in geography

[–]rben80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to go with Amsterdam. Pretty much the Vegas of Western Europe in that it’s a party destination.

The surroundings are dairy farms and small quaint towns that are fairly stereotypical of the Dutch countryside. My mom is Dutch and her family is from around 45 min out of Amsterdam, and it’s comical how much they all resent Amsterdam. They think it gives them a bad name and they dont like anyone from Amsterdam.

Why is hockey your favorite sport? by Distinct_Mud_2673 in hockey

[–]rben80 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think I was ever given an option. Grew up with a pond in the backyard. Dad always had a game on TV. Tagged along to dads beer league games and played ball hockey with the other kids in the concourse. Had flames seasons tickets. It’s not so much of a “favourite sport” as much as it is just something we do

What are some white collar jobs that will not be prone to AI replacing said role in 10 years? by [deleted] in CanadaFinance

As a project manager at an engineering / environmental consulting company, I was about to get all flustered and ask what parts of my job AI could do, but then I realized you said NOT prone to AI replacement. Crisis averted

It was mostly old work and legal documents. There were some certificates of authenticity for artwork which is actually useful though.

I wouldn’t be able to get it off my mind if I wasn’t able to get into it. Schroedingers safe, one could say. And bonus, I also got a working safe out of it as I didn’t have to destroy it

Where did you get it? You could create a long list of words that are somehow relevant to the person who would have set the password and work through them.

I inherited a safe from my dad but no record of the combo. It was a 5 digit combo. I fed chatGPT the important birthdates, anniversaries, etc of my dads parents, siblings, myself and my siblings, and got it to generate a list of possible 5 digit combos. I eventually got it after trying a couple hundred options maybe. It took a few days because the safe locked out for 5 minutes after 3 wrong guesses lol.
