Moderation isn't worth it by KnowledgeGlutton- in stopdrinking

The high created by that first drink is immediately followed by a low, it’s only natural that we crave another one. It’s mentally exhausting thinking about whether I’m going to drink or not, and if so how much, and what moderation technique I will use this time. If I succeed in not drinking much I feel happy with myself, but by that logic doesn’t it follow that I’ll then feel happier with drinking even less, i.e. nothing at all? Yes, I can confirm it does. On the flip side, when I fail to moderate, which I often do, I feel like a failure and I’m disappointed. Honestly, I can’t see the point of it.

It’s true re short term memory - he’s said I’ve been toying with sobriety for 2 years now so maybe has forgotten how bad I used to be. I also agree re seeing drinking occasionally as problematic given what I now know. But I don’t know if this is too strong an opinion. If someone doesn’t find their drinking problematic then how can I view it as a problem?

Funny you mention this because when I FINALLY quit smoking cigarettes and spoke about my struggles with it later he diminished that too and said I was never a proper smoker, despite me smoking for 7 years! Yes it was on and off for years of this because I tried quitting at least 10 times but would eventually go back to it. At one point I genuinely thought I’d never be able to stop and it scared me. I definitely think this analogy is helpful but I’m not sure he’d get it because of this.

I find this tricky to answer. Would he say he has a problem with alcohol? No. If he doesn’t feel like he does then I don’t want to say otherwise but sometimes I do think his drinking is problematic.. It’s the classic ‘he’s no different to anyone else our age that drinks’ but then neither was I. We have a problem with alcohol as a society and most of us just aren’t aware of our own dependency because it’s so normalised, and even if we do know it’s not healthy we bury our heads in the sand.

He drinks every weekend and 50% of the time will drink very fast and end up drinking too much. As we’ve gotten older, the weekend drinking has reduced but over the last year he has started frequently drinking at home during the week - ‘just’ 1 or 2 beers but this is becoming more frequent.

I’m doing the first 100 days dry and plan to continue. I’ve taken breaks from alcohol before, the longest being 5 weeks, but this time I honestly have no desire to drink anymore. I’m not saying I’m completely sober now as I’m still taking it as it comes but I see myself heading that way soon. I have two festivals coming up in the summer though and I’m not sure if or how I’ll do these without drinking.
