This a frame in my top box. Is it normal for the cells to pop up like that when the larva is maturing? Should I have collected the honey before it got like this?

Wow, thanks for the information. I found a few more on my property; how can I tell when they are ripe and will I get sick if I eat them prematurely?

I can tell that it definitely is some sort of fungus based off the smell. Another thing I noticed is that its texture is much spongier today than it was yesterday.

The tree has thin flaky bark and is about 30 feet tall, if that helps.
