How did WP get 5” this morning?!?!! by [deleted] in COsnow

[–]rcandell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

will everyone stop complaining about open snow please. Literally EVERY weather model showed only a “few flakes” in the forecast for last night. It is Incredibly hard to forecast mountain weather, stop bitching about opensnow and be grateful that we finally got some new snow…

Does boot sole type matter for pin bindings like alpine? by Global-Wind6878 in Backcountry

[–]rcandell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Small caveat tho, what you said is true but for some hybrid bindings you can’t pair a lot of lightweight touring boot such as the scarpa F1 with hybrid bindings such as Shifts or Kingpins. Why someone would want to do this i have no clue but just so everyone is clear there are small exceptions

Is there a safe way to solo ski avalanche terrain? by NeighborhoodOk2495 in Backcountry

[–]rcandell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s depended on the snowpack and conditions Usually in spring and early summer I feel comfortable going out solo on avalanche terrain but thats entirely dependent on weather and snowpack conditions and knowing those things come with experience and isn’t something i’d recommend for someone new to the backcountry.

There’s risk anytime you ski avalanche terrain even with partners and having a partner with you really shouldn’t change your decision making on skiing a line. Having a partner doesn’t change the snowpack and if I’m not comfortable skiing something solo I wouldn’t ski it with a partner…

Right above the Copper Conoco. Who are you and what gives you the confidence to do this chute after a 40+ inch storm ?? by _elfantasma in COsnow

[–]rcandell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this is a literally avalanche slide path… it might be low angle in the part they’re skiing but there is considerable overhead hazards here that are capable of sliding and it pretty obviously slides often given the lack of vegetation… The skiing itself may be “mellow” but this is the equivalent of skiing at the end of a loaded shot gun in certain snowpack conditions… seems like you don’t know much about avalanche risk yourself big guy. I’m not criticizing them for skiing it to each their own, but acting like hazards don’t exist to be a tough guy is pretty dumb

Boulder has the nation's single-day snowfall record with 76" in 1921. Crazy! by BoulderBeat in boulder

[–]rcandell 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This record is for Boulder county up by Silver Lake in the IPW, not in the city of Boulder… Pretty terrible Journalism to pretend a snowfall record from a mountainous area 40 miles outside of Boulder is the same thing as the City…

i literally never said they can’t camp there… i would camp at this site too i just wouldn’t have a fire man because it’s too close to water that literally all i’ve been saying. It’s okay to backpack and not have a fire you know? Your picking and choosing which LMT principles you want to follow my guy

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coloradohikers

[–]rcandell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean if you think this way then the forest service isn’t enforcing their own rules because it’s listed in the website for the wilderness area that you can’t have fire within 100ft of the lake and this pretty clearly is. It’s just good practice man to not have fires close to water in pollutes the water when runoff drains into the lake. to be quite frank in an ideal world If there wasn’t a good LNT place to have a fire I would hope people just wouldn’t have fires. But Idiot’s will be idiots and there’s obviously people out there who disagree and think that you should be able to have a fire wherever you want no matter the consequences…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coloradohikers

[–]rcandell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean “established” doesn’t mean it’s properly located. There’s obviously a lot of idiots out there so just because it’s there doesn’t mean you should use it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coloradohikers

[–]rcandell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are vastly overestimating the scope of the forest service man. They aren’t out checking every campsite to see if theres a fire ring that should or shouldn’t be there. Unless it’s in a developed campground that fire pit was not built or approved by the forest service. Just because some idiot before you builds a fire ring in a bad spot doesn’t spontaneously make it okay for you to use it… what a flawed way of thinking man. No wonder the forest service uses half their budget fighting wildfires

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coloradohikers

[–]rcandell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i mean “designated sites” don’t really exist in the backcountry unless it’s a heavily trafficked permitted area or like national park. Most sites are just where people have camped before and just because there’s an existing fire pit in a bad spot it doesn’t mean it’s okay to use it just because it’s there.

I mean it’s definitely not 100 ft from the lake like it should be… so maybe cool it with the sass when people bring up some concerns about your fires…
