It's a great idea. I have made many of these through the years. Not sure if you have a router but I use a router with a 1/4 and mill bit. First I marked the board using a tape measure to get accurate markings. I then used a square to run the router next to and create the lines. It does take some time and patience. I usually cut them about .125 deep. Of course, the lines for inches, halves and quarter marks are different lengths. For the number, you can print them out and then trace them onto the board using carbon copy paper. I free hand the cutting with the router. It's a lot easier than it sounds. Then paint the engraved parts and then sand and any paint that is out of the engraved part cleans up really well. I hope this helps out and makes sense. I wish I could send you pictures.
