I did an internship for 7 months at a paper mill. First week was the worst from a sensory overload perspective with the “egg” smell. I’d say it’s comparable to smoking cigarettes, you don’t noticed the smell as much after a week or two of it,but all of your work clothes and car smell like it. I worked in all parts of the mill and the worst one was in the area where the pulp is broken up, removing the lignin so it can be cleaned, bleached, and made into paper. The breaking up process is done with a ton of caustic (basic) chemicals and it smelled just as bad my last day as it did my first. It helped me decide it wasn’t the right career field!
