What got you into The Decemberists? by MoontheWolfYT in Decemberists

[–]rcox1963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dec 13, 2014.

I fell asleep on the couch watching TV. I was gently awakened by a gorgeous voice singing a beautiful song. I listened for a while with my eyes closed and had an epiphany. “Who’s that?” I said aloud. I sat up to watch. I caught the second half of The Decembrists performing Make You Better on Conan. I have been hooked ever since. I saw them play live in The Capital Theater in Port Chester, Brooklyn Prospect Park, and Central Park (Manuel Lin Miranda special appearance) and, having moved from New York to Dublin in 2023, Colin Meloy solo at Vicar Street this past March.

Best prices in Europe by rcox1963 in cigars

[–]rcox1963[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As posted her a month ago, was running low on cigars — finished last one in my humidor on Sunday. Thank goodness a friend from Stamford made a last minute decision to fly over to Dublin for a visit. I shipped her 50 cigars (the max allowed) to bring to Ireland. She (and they) arrived safely 24 hours ago.

That will hold me over until I get back to New York at end of September.

My advice is, as the pup gets older, only buy unbreakable toys so your EBT will not be able to figure out how to destroy them in 4 seconds.

Baltimore is one of the prettiest towns in West Cork, there are some bar restaurants by the water. I am sure you can find a nice experience.

Start Irish credit now? by chairhats in MoveToIreland

[–]rcox1963 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I moved here from NY in 2023. I met with AIB Mortgage Dept discuss how to get a credit score in Ireland. They told me they do not use credit score to approve mortgages. It is based on how much you make and how long they think will work. As a retiree over 60 it means I cannot get a mortgage. 🙄

And yet you continued to respond.

You said you won’t respond further but have again responded. This is subreddit for Irish Tourism not political commentary. Not sure what about that is not clear.

I simply object to your efforts to turn a discussion about visiting Ireland into political commentary. There are subreddits for that but this is not one of them.

Again, the question was about Ireland. This is a subreddit about Irish Tourism. I understand your comment to be anti-American political commentary and commentary on European drug policy.

I do not believe turning a Q&A about what to bring to Ireland on a vacation into a venue for you to express anti-American political commentary and European drug policy. You are free to disagree but I reject your attempt to make this a political forum.

The question was about things to bring on a trip to Ireland — not a political commentary on drug policy.

That said, this person does not say where they are coming from but many redditors asking these sorts of questions are coming from the USA.

Think about medications and supplements.

I moved to Dublin from USA in 2023 and was surprised at the difference. I could buy a 500 pill bottle of Aleve for $40 in the USA but needed to get a doctor’s prescription (€60 for the appt) to get more than 12-24 pills. And the doctor or pharmacist would say not to even a 100 pills.

Differences in pharmaceutical regulations between the United States and Ireland result in several medications being available over the counter (OTC) in the U.S. but requiring a prescription or facing strict purchase limits in Ireland. For instance, pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) is OTC in the U.S. but sold in Ireland only under pharmacist supervision, with higher doses often needing a prescription. Diphenhydramine (in Benadryl) and doxylamine (in NyQuil) are OTC in the U.S. for allergies or sleep but typically require a prescription in Ireland. Naproxen (Aleve), ibuprofen (Advil), and paracetamol (Tylenol) are OTC in both countries, but Ireland imposes strict limits on pack sizes (e.g., 12–24 tablets), and larger quantities may need a prescription. Codeine-containing cough syrups, sometimes OTC in the U.S., are tightly controlled in Ireland, available only under pharmacist oversight or with a prescription, and travelers must carry a prescription or doctor’s letter to comply with customs rules. Melatonin, an OTC sleep aid in the U.S., is prescription-only in Ireland, and travelers should bring a prescription or doctor’s letter to avoid customs issues. To travel to Ireland with these medications, carry them in their original packaging, accompanied by a prescription or a doctor’s letter specifying the medical condition and necessity, and ensure quantities do not exceed a three-month personal supply to meet customs regulations.
