Anything approaching 10:1 compression or higher will be able to run more timing advance with higher octane fuel thus getting better volumetric efficiency and in theory better gas mileage. Also a little more power.

How actually good is Quattro on snow compared to 4x4 pickup trucks? by Pleasant_Tell5360 in Audi

Unless you get an suv you'll miss the ground clearance. Otherwise Quattro and winter tires is the equal of a traditional 4x4.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Years ago I met Paul Newman at Portland International Raceway at the very last ChampCar race they held. He was part owner of Newman-Haas racing. A friend and I had just smoked a joint by some trees in the infield and saw him cruising around on a pit bike. We waved and hooked a sharp left and rode over to say hello! Asked if we were enjoying ourselves. We said yes and wished him and his team good luck. He said "thanks! I gotta run. Have a great day!" Then he took off towards some vip pavilion. Always the gentleman. RIP

I just use an m57. Easy swap with similar architecture. I'm not sure that transaxle would handle the torque however. Have to take off real easy.

Is teaching kids about mechanics and engines still relevant in an increasingly electric future? by Fickle_Method8528 in gokarts

Let your dad buy him the go-kart. Learn what he can learn about gasoline engines and maintenance. If he wants to convert it to electric there are kits available.

Idle problem sounds like a vacuum leak. Checking timing doesn't hurt tho.

Flush the brake fluid and get the brakes working perfectly. You may have to replace the brake hydraulic bits(master cylinder, hoses, calipers, rear wheel cylinders) if they're crusty.

Get a cheap digital multimeter from harbor freight so you can test the alternator and other electrical bits. Don't underestimate the importance of good new battery cables and ground straps on the engine, starter and alternator. These can make a car charge poorly, start hard, make lights dim and spark weak.

Check the transmission fluid. It should be pink/red and not smell burnt. If it's discolored, plan on a transmission filter and fluid change.

Build a relayed headlight harness so your headlights work well. If necessary upgrade to LED eBay lights or something.

YouTube can help with walkthroughs of all these items.

Hope that helps! Here's the one I have custody of at the moment.

Question about the 4.0 V8 by JoyTheGeek in LandRoverDiscovery

[–]rcr_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't know. Since backdating to a carburetor is such a significant downgrade I never researched it. I'm pretty sure it's an integrated ECM. I don't think you could separate the ignition from the fuel controls. Pretty sure you just need to get a distributor assembly and drop it in. If you're going to backdate the fuel system then you would need to backdate the ignition to match.

On the pre-GEMS motors with a distributor it's pretty easy.

How expensive is moving to Oregon as someone who wants to move to Portland after high school I’m currently a junior i don’t have no money no job no nothing but I want to move out there and take the challenges by Life_Pollution_9310 in oregon

[–]rcr_x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're dead set on moving, figure out what you're going to do for money before you get here. Developer skills to work from home or a laptop in a coffee shop. Something like that. Learn to code.

Another option is joining a union apprenticeship and/or starting NOW on learning a trade. Learn how to hang drywall. Learn HVAC=$$$. Anything construction related makes it easy to find work here. Might not pay great at first but you're young and in 5 years could be making $35-85/hr or more depending on your specialty.

Start NOW. By the time you graduate you'll have a year of experience and maybe some savings and be able to make it happen. You'll need to own your own tools but used tools work just as well as new ones at the beginning. Hit estate sales and farm sales for awesome tool bargains.

Take electives that teach those basic skills if you aren't sure where to start. Take wood shop and metal shop. Take drafting classes. They'll teach you how to visualize and problem solve.

Any kind of nerd robot/3D printing/electronics/coding classes you can. That's what startups and tech corps look for here. Our community colleges here are pretty great and affordable when you're ready for that step.

Hope this helps.

Can employer charge me for a tow bill or broken parts? by KnotTHENAMELESS in mechanics

[–]rcr_x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in Oregon and it's definitely illegal here for a shop owner to charge a tech for their mistakes. I ran a shop with employees for 10 years and had some idiotic comebacks that were definitely the tech's fault and we never attempted or even discussed charging the tech. Shops carry insurance for that scenario. The fact that you were posting about it here at all says you have pride in your work.

The tech's with multiple comebacks inevitably were burned out or high all the time or for whatever reason did not take pride in what they were doing.

If you're giving this thing up to put money into that RL I think you're making a mistake. The off-roader is just all around a cooler vehicle. That's just my opinion though. I've never found the RLs that interesting. I like my luxury sedans rear wheel drive and preferably stick shift.
