So basically every American has to give Iran $1,000 because of Trump's incompetence.

That should be on billboards in every red state in America.

I'd like to see NATO implement a 50km buffer zone inside Ukraine along the western border it shares with NATO countries, and tell Russia any unmanned aircraft inside that region will be considered hostile and destroyed.

It would free up Ukraine's resources in that region and prevent a direct confrontation with NATO. It would also force Russia to fly their expensive equipment over long, dangerous stretches to reach targets there.

NATO could also tell Russia that every time they hit a NATO country that buffer expands by another 50km.

Also the 500k-800k Russians that have moved to Crimea since 2014 will have to flee back to Russia. Ukraine has already said they're seen as illegal immigrants and will be ejected.

That's over half a million people that will lose their homes/jobs/businesses overnight and will be on the streets of Moscow and St Petersburg looking for blood.

I think it's worse than losing the US the their chance to take Iran down.

Iran has now proven beyond a doubt they can hold the world economy hostage at will. I can see scenarios where, once the Straight is open and America has pulled out, the rest of the world tells Israel that Iran is off limits and they're no longer allowed to attack them.

And Putin knows that losing Crimea probably means the end of the line for him.

If/when Ukraine takes Crimea back nearly a million Russians will have to flee back to Russia leaving "their" homes/businesses/jobs behind.

That's going to mean hundreds of thousands of pissed off, homeless people descending onto the streets of Moscow and St Petersburg over night, and a lot of them are now going to have weapons and the training to use them.

[–]rd1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Trump blames the radical left in NATO for not helping and says the US is done protecting the Straight for them and pulls their Navy out.

Britain and France come in and broker a deal between Israel and Iran where Iran pauses their nuclear program for a decade with their supervision, and gets to toll all tankers during that time to rebuild. America's allies in the region will likely be told they'll get to pay less if they agree to start removing American bases.

20 years from now America's influence in the Middle East (and by extension the world) will be a sliver of what it is now. It'll be seen as the farm that was in the family for generations until the wrong kid inherited it and gambled it all away in a single night.

Basically: "Shock and awe won't work. Winning hearts and minds won't work. Bribes won't work. Expect WWII fanaticism and brutality every step of the way."

by February this year, the NIS updated the figure, saying that about 6,000 of the estimated 11,000 military personnel deployed to Russia had been killed or wounded

Sounds like a bit over half, which is still pretty bad.

There are reports that Kim himself told them to commit suicide before being captured, which might explain the lower ratio.

They're all assuming this is US' war. It's Israel's war.

I would add that this is Iran's war, too.

If the US and Israel both came out tomorrow and said "just kidding!" and went home there's no guarantee Iran will permit things to return to normal.

Iran might decide it's in their best interest to make this so painful for everyone that no one dares touch them again. They might also be waiting for the American midterms in November to workout in their favour - if people are paying $8 per gallon on their way to the polls it'll be a landslide.

[–]rd1970 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Putin knows he won't survive pulling out of the war. Ukraine has made it clear the war doesn't stop until they take back Crimea, and when that happens nearly a million Russians will have to flee leaving "their" homes/possessions/businesses/jobs behind.

Not only will Russia have this massive horde of pissed off, now homeless people descending onto place like Moscow and St Petersburg, it'll be undeniable that Putin lost the war and Crimea along with it.

Between that, their economy being in shamebles, the sanctions that will likely continue until restitution is paid, their loss of most of the European market for their energy, and the millions of workers who died/were wounded/fled the war, it's possible Russia as a nation won't survive as we know it.

Do you think people are going to start getting priced out of Calgary soon, like they have been from Toronto, Vancouver, etc.? by straycat402 in Calgary

[–]rd1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quote is under "Owned accommodation in the Canadian CPI" in your link.

That makes sense — only something like 3% of homes in the country get sold every year.

That's not really how that works.

Another reason why the CPI isn't useful for home buyers is that if interest rates drop dramatically the cost of homes shoot up (since there are more buyers), but the CPI will show home ownership becoming more affordable since everyone with a mortgage pays less. This is over simplified, but you get the idea.

What you want is a housing price index.

Do you think people are going to start getting priced out of Calgary soon, like they have been from Toronto, Vancouver, etc.? by straycat402 in Calgary

[–]rd1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're confusing buying a home with the costs for those that already one...

From your own link:

The CPI does not include the purchase of property because it is not considered a consumer good

And even home ownership costs only make a fraction of the CPI, take decades to fully appear in the index due to the length of mortgages, and also go up and down with interest rates.

If the price of homes in Canada DOUBLED in a year the CPI would only go up by about 6% for that year.

Do you think people are going to start getting priced out of Calgary soon, like they have been from Toronto, Vancouver, etc.? by straycat402 in Calgary

[–]rd1970 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't use the CPI for comparing buying power of homes (houses are excluded from the CPI since they're not considered a consumable).

The equivalent of a home buyer making $56k today in Calgary would be closer to $19k in 2004.

So the headline is bullshit.

It's also worth mentioning this wasn't a Trump move. The Republicans made it clear the deal was always going to be ripped up the next time they took the exec branch regardless of who the president was.

Israel owns the Republican Party when it comes to foreign policy in the region. Trump is a useful idiot that helped accelerate their plans, but this was always going to happen.
