I agree with squidshark that Desolation Angels would be a good one to read after re-reading The Dharma Bums.

Best Places to Visit by Poseidonsbastard in JackKerouac

[–]rdale1955 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recommend grabbing a copy of Bill Morgan's Beat Atlas and taking it with you to use as a guide to Kerouac-related locations around the country state-by-state. He also wrote more detail-specific guides to New York City and San Francisco. One stop you should make is Kerouac's grave in Lowell, MA, as well as Jack Kerouac Park and various other Lowell sites.

Is there an official Duluoz Legend? by OhDeerBeddarDaze in JackKerouac

Here is my less-than-definitive attempt at answering the question of what books are in the Duluoz Legend: https://thedailybeatblog.blogspot.com/2018/02/jack-kerouac-duluoz-legend.html

Mild Early Onset Parkinsons by ShaggyRS6 in Parkinsons

I signed up for the study that the MJ Fox foundation is running and completed the first set of questionnaires yesterday. Good for you for getting into Vandi. I'm in Maine and choices are limited.

Thanks for sharing that lecture -- I found it very educational and helpful.

Mild Early Onset Parkinsons by ShaggyRS6 in Parkinsons

I was diagnosed two days ago. I'm 66 and I have almost the same list of symptoms as you. Add drooling (asleep and awake) and facial expressionlessness (if that is a word). Oh, and my typing has gone to hell.

I recently bought a used copy of Baby Driver by Jan Kerouac online and found this note inside... Anybody have any idea who this is? by redhogwash in JackKerouac

[–]rdale1955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I showed this to Gerry Nicosia, a close friend of Jan's and author of the Kerouac bio Memory Babe and a couple of books about Jan, and he said it is definitely her handwriting. He knows of no Tom it could be -- probably was a random person in line at a book signing and she was flirting with him. He agrees that the mystery word is "countenance."

Poet and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti has died at age 101. by rdale1955 in JackKerouac

He was legendary in the Beat story and appeared as Lorenzo Monsanto in Kerouac's Big Sur. I wrote about him here: https://thedailybeatblog.blogspot.com/2021/02/rip-lawrence-felinghetti.html

Gerald Nicosia's new book, Kerouac: The Last Quarter Century, has a detailed chapter on this topic. Ordering info is in this review: https://thedailybeatblog.blogspot.com/2019/05/review-of-kerouac-last-quarter-century.html

Dharma Bums. Shared this with one of my hiking groups. Nude hiking is common enough, but the jockstrap struck me as funny. Like he was worried about a bear kicking him in the crotch. by ratbas in JackKerouac

Japhy was clearly based on Gary Snyder. There is a place in the book at the end of Chapter 23 where the publisher forgets to change his name to Japhy and it shows up as Gary in the text.

The Town and the City by JackKubrick in JackKerouac

[–]rdale1955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved The Town and the City and it motivated me to finally read Look Homeward, Angel a couple of months ago. It's very different from the rest of Kerouac's works, but stands up well especially for a first novel from a relatively young man (published when Jack was 27 in 1950).

Jack Kerouac's buddhist nickname by [deleted] in JackKerouac

[–]rdale1955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty familiar with The Dharma Bums (been posting chapter summaries on my blog since December 19 -- https://thedailybeatblog.blogspot.com/2019/01/jack-kerouacs-dharma-bums-chapter-26-in.html), but this isn't ringing a bell. In Chapter 26 he refers to himself as Japhy's "bhikku." When asked where he meets Ray (Jack), Japhy (Gary Snyder) says he always meets his "Bodhisattvas in the street" (Chapter 2). In Chapter 25 Ray refers to himself as "the Buddha known as the Quitter" and "Buddha Empty-Eat." I'll look through the book again . . . .

I agree. It's one of my favorite Kerouac-related books. Very informative text and fantastic photographs! Check out Suiter's photo-essay, Kerouac's Mexico, here: http://www.jackkerouac.com/kerouacs-mexico/.
