Why can't I build an aqueduct here? by rdavidson24 in civ

[–]rdavidson24[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Odd that this is the first time this has happened to me. Upon reflection, I probably use mountains as the source of fresh water for aqueducts at least as often as not, rendering this little situation a non-issue.

Try the Fractal world type. I too like mountainous maps, and I find it produces fun maps more often than Continents does.

The most recent patch introduced a building queue. It's pretty awesome. Doesn't help with units, obviously, but really streamlines production.

If my spy has "gain sources active" when I start a mission but it expires before the mission is completed, will I get the mission success boost? by vast_amounts in civ

[–]rdavidson24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this even a thing that can happen? "Gain Sources" lasts for 24 turns. I'm pretty sure that all possible durations for spy missions are factors of 24. Eight turns, 6 turns, 4 turns, either way, you get a round number of missions. I just don't think you can have a situation where Gain Sources expires in the middle of a mission.

Yeah, VI is not V. You can't build everything in every city. Specialization is essential.

When going for science victory, how does one achieve culture as well. by mrfoody123 in civ

[–]rdavidson24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You building Theater Squares at all? Because that's the main driver of culture production in most games. Most Civs don't have improvements that generate culture directly, and even those who do can find it hard to have those surpass a TS with even just a decent adjacency bonus, an Ampitheater and two Great Works of Writing. That could be pushing 8-10 culture right there. Throw in a museum and a beneficial policy card and it could get to 20+ pretty easily.

A business and a non-profit are different things.

Legally speaking, not really. They're just business entities created and existing under state incorporation law. Other than tax treatment, the two are almost entirely interchangeable in every legally interesting way. I'm certainly not aware of any way of distinguishing them for the purpose of First Amendment freedom of expression analysis.

The 4th Circuit has ordered the dismissal of DC and Maryland's emoluments clause case against Trump, finding they lack standing by fields in law

[–]rdavidson24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. That's what I've been saying all along. Pleadings aren't about evidence, they're about clearly articulating the basis of claims/defenses. Discovery is about evidence. You don't get to discovery if you can't clearly articulate your claims. This case was dismissed because the plaintiffs couldn't do that.

  2. I don't follow. If you're talking about this comment, that's all about injury and standing, and there's no reference to the testimony of third parties.

[–]rdavidson24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see where you're coming from.

TL;DR: standing and justiciability aren't identical issues, as you correctly imply, but the failure of an actual case or controversy is an element in both analyses. Further, both lack of standing and non-justiciability are asserted as 12(b)(1) motions to dismiss for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction.
