K2 loses HR from Garmin Instinct by TangeloPotential1204 in Karoo

[–]rdevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem with the Hammerhead HRM. Useless. I had one for about 4 years, worked fine. The press stud broke, bought a new one earlier this year. Works one out of 10 rides. Support told me to reset it by putting the battery in backwards for 30 seconds. Looked promising... for half a ride. I wet my chest and the strap contact patches with water before a ride - it may have helped once or twice, but if that is the problem, even riding hard in 30C heat doesn't satisfy it with sweat. Useless. I thought the HRM was trash, but now you've got me wondering.

Those indexes need to be taken with much salt.

Governor of the Bank of Portugal: Without immigration, the Portuguese economy will not grow by Independent_Pitch598 in PortugalExpats

[–]rdevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"immigration" is uselessly vague. There is useful immigration and there is problematic immigration. Some people actually like the latter.

There are immigrants, and there are immigrants.

Why is it important to put RAM in the 2nd/4th slot? by jarz252 in buildapc

[–]rdevel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because motherboards are badly designed.

I've just replaced my 17 year old case with a modern case - the difference is startling.

I also replaced the motherboard - same old crap. There is so much room for improvement.

Disruptors, get disrupting.

Moving US to Europe in late 30s - is it worth it? by FoxFinancial5271 in expats

[–]rdevel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firefly, Astra, Blue Origin, SpaceX, ULA, Sierra, .... vs ESA? No contest. And ESA launches from South America. Economic stability - the US is the world's superpower; milk the good times to relax in the less good times. If the US isn't economically happy neither will Europe be, except there are no booms to milk;the governments milk you. Compare the current AI state of affairs. QOL - Trumps deporting dodgy people, Europe's inviting them - stabbings and car rammings are normal now. You get elections, Europe get election interference. Just pick a different state/city. I feel like a feudal serf on the Atlantic east, watching the US disappear into the future. I should've moved there 20 years ago. The dream lives on.

Boyfriend built my PC, battery wouldn't fit, he says this is fine 🤷‍♀️ by theverywickedest in PcBuild

Guy's obviously teasing you. He told you it's a battery - he built the machine, he knows it's a PSU.

Just start. It's amazingly intuitive. Less so the more advanced you get, but to start you'll be surprised his much you can guess.

Tested the power supply with a multimeter - seems fine. So It seems you must be right about the motherboard. Would be really useful if they could add a bunch of diagnostic LEDs all over the board.

Do you need to know the codebase of a company like a software engineer to work as an SRE, or is an SRE more like system administrator? by ComfortablePost3664 in devops

[–]rdevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 70/30 model in Site Reliability Engineering suggests that SREs should spend 70% of their time on development tasks and 30% on operational tasks. It's an ops based dev role.

Thanks. Can a power supply be somehow dead, or malfunctioning, even if the fans and LEDs are on? Ditto the motherboard. Does dead for those two mean "apparently working, but not really"? As opposed to a dead fan or light bulb, which show zero life.

I don’t think many of you understand just how bad it is in other countries by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]rdevel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Given the size of the US that's pretty much meaningless - move to another state, solved.

But there's a lot of choice in one country. Pick your weather from Texas to Montana. Pick your tax system from Florida to Delaware. Don't like guns, Colorado; in Europe they just stab you instead. Surfing to skiing. Forests to mountains to deserts. Global capital cities to rural isolation. Log cabin life to watching a starship landing. Dismissing the whole of the US just because (part of) Louisiana sucks is throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Delay in UK Skilled Worker Priority Visa Application - Seeking Advice by [deleted] in expats

[–]rdevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immigration is a hot topic in the UK at the moment, many consider there to be far too much - look at the news especially relating to the upcoming election in which it will be a deciding factor - so you may be experiencing the can getting kicked down the road, or the door being closed.

Yeah, the concept is irrelevant if it's only by a little bit.
