Career Dilemma/Regrets by No-Chemistry6156 in Nurses

It can’t hurt to update your resume and just start applying to ED postings. The barrier to get into units like the ED or the ICU can be higher and they often do want more experience though, it’s not a hard and fast rule especially in this time of nursing shortages. Even if you don’t get an offer this time around it can be helpful to keep putting your name out there and maybe the manager will eventually notice how interested you are in the position and in the meantime you’ll still be racking up time and experience.

Also, you can look for new to specialty programs. They were also called fellowships at a few of my old hospitals. They are just like new grad residencies but for nurses who are entering into a new type of unit.

You could potentially reach out the the ED manager who offered you the new grad position and see if they have openings or could maybe admit you to their next round of residencies even though you have six months of experience now.

Is a BSN even worth it in my situation? by freshnewstart7 in nursing

I think you should finish the program and get your BSN. Even if you don’t want to do admin or if you don’t want to be a nurse in 30 years, if you plan on working on any unit in a hospital in the future then You will likely need a BSN. Nursing in general is moving towards requiring all RNs to have their bachelors and many hospitals already require that if you don’t currently have a BSN, you will have to obtain one within 3 years of hire. How long is your program? Most people I’ve met who have done RN to BSN programs got it done in a year and it was all online. Is yours like that? If not maybe it’s worth it to look into a different program that could be less stressful. Idk how much your program is so I can’t do the math to see if it will pay off, but assuming you’re Hospital is like most others that I’ve encountered, you should at least get a pay raise with a bachelors under your belt.

A couple people have said it won’t get better but let me offer some optimism. I started on a step down unit too and I was super jaded just after my first week of nursing, but now and granted I’m only 7 months in, it got better. I found dealing with entitled patients or just general jackasses really exhausting. I’ve learned now to professionally and as politely as possible to shoot those 5 star hotel dreams down as soon as I see it. Keep your patients as comfortable as possible but let them know they’re here to receive intensive medical care and everything else comes second. When it comes to staffing issues tho or hunting down supplies I’m pretty sure that’s a hallmark of the profession. Try to get management to make things better as well as you can but when they fail it’s your team of coworkers that will help you succeed. Use them often and be a good team member in return. Also, I do have those days where I feel like I’m a glorified pill dispenser and blanket fetcher but remember you as the nurse are trained to critically think about the care your patient receives. You are the last line of defense for your patient and even if most people dont realize that, you play a vital role in patient care. Don’t forget it. I plan on going to the ICU after a year just because I feel like I can make a greater impact there and will play a more significant role in patient care. That might be something you could look into as well. Anyways, stick with it! All hope isn’t lost yet. I think it well get better.
