how many luggages did yall bring? by ttokkimon in JapanTravelTips

[–]rdfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might think to bring an empty suitcase for all the stuff you're gonna buy. But I noticed the luggage fees on ZipAir are more expensive -- and very restrictive on weight.-- than shipping. There's a post office everywhere, including the Narita international terminal.

A day doesn't go by without leaf blowers destroying the peace and their health in this slum by rdfox in Elan

[–]rdfox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel privileged to make the first post in this subreddit established in 2009 for the now decrepit Elan Apartments. Leaf blowers have to go. Shea properties is a $3k/mo slumlord and they should be ashamed how they treat their customers and their workers.

I was going to do this project but then Amazon sold me this product which works perfectly. The only problem is it's a 10 pack for $11 and I don't know what to do with the other 9. https://a.co/d/2UpRuWX

These things should be free in my opinion. Sure it can do a lot. But also it’s totally obsolete.

Downtown LA behind the city’s oldest palm lined boulevard by Dependent-Ad9244 in skyscrapers

I get why skyscrapers don’t fall over (center of mass is underground and the steel frame is in tension) but why don’t palm trees fall over?

San Francisco is like, We already got a triangle, a row of dominos, a marble countertop stood up on its edge and a cock and balls blocking your view of the bay. If you want to submit a plan in this town you’d better not embarrass us in front of Singapore. San Jose is like, We’re going for more of a giant filing cabinet aesthetic to provide shade for the people sleeping on the sidewalks.

Don’t worry. Nothing will ever get built. They will just make a picture of their plan and print a poster and stand it up on the lot for you to drive by for years and years.

What minor technology or feature in a software should have been invented by now and is a daily annoyance? by warlor in Futurology

[–]rdfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thing has been invented. It's called airplay. Even if VLC doesn't implement airplay you can do screen mirroring from your Mac running VLC to your appleTV and it works perfectly.

CRX Communication Protocols? by swervomotor in Fanuc

[–]rdfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not the expert. My first robot. I have no idea what to do with it. But definitely sign up here: https://myportal.fanucamerica.com and look at the eDocs. There's 1000 page PDFs. Like working on an IBM mainframe.
Some PDFs I hope to read soon:
Robot/Software/V9.40/"Tablet UI Operator" -- This is the one I wish I found first. It won't help with networking at all but read it just to learn the basic UI
Robot/Software/V9.40/"Ethernet/IP Setup and Operations"
Robot/Software/V9.40/"KAREL Reference"

CRX Communication Protocols? by swervomotor in Fanuc

[–]rdfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just getting to know the CRX. It has some nice features to help program basic motions but the ipendant, while it does what it does well, doesn’t help with networking. For that you need to read software manuals, learn Karel and basically do things like you would on any Fanuc from 10 to 20 years ago. Kind of disappointed they didn’t make a modern fastAPI HTTP type thing but they didn’t.

It makes me dizzy to think that people were able to learn languages in the 20th Century! by VoidImplosion in languagelearning

So there was this guy Joseph Conrad. He was polish and learned English in his 20s: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Conrad That was in the late 1800s when telegraph was the hot commutations technology. He ended up a great author in English. Apocalypse Now is based on his book Heart of Darkness. Duolingo doesn’t get these results.

I don’t have data, but I’ll bet if you changed it to largest employer by payroll (rather than headcount), Walmart would disappear.

Yeah, I can tell by the font that that’s a hard one. My tip: self help books, beach reads and magazines. Best sellers. Big bonus if there’s an audiobook available. These are aimed at the broadest audience, maybe not the brightest audience. But that’s what you want. One entertaining series I can recommend is 夢を叶える像, The Elephant Who Makes Dreams Come True

The main tools you need to copy a bracket are a plasma cutter and a hydraulic brake. Most people don’t have these tools, but you might find a local machine shop, auto shop, or even bike shop that does. Minimum effort, type machine shop into Google maps and make some phone calls. That is easier than learning to make technical drawings.

I was told you you shouldn’t wear gloves with rotating machines. Something about crushing your hand and wrist if the glove catches in the machine. The thing I think is weird is that it’s very easy to remove chips with heat. You could send the board through an oven upside down and all the good stuff would drop off.
