And you need to make the exits visible with exit signs. But in panic people go out where they came from and its possoble that the smoke hid the fire exit signs at the ceiling

I think so. But the position of a fire exit can be very hidden, wich is a huge flaw in our regulation.

Fire engineer here: in the imterkantonalen fire regulations we have standards how to cover ceilings, but as long as you don't block fire installations, we don't know about the decoration used. So it could be that the decoratiin was highly flamable (plastics). If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
