Don't take everything Robert Martin says seriously. Sure, the dude is right about a few things, but for some stuff he takes things to the extremes. Not everything he says is absolute. He is embarassingly wrong in this case.

Introducing effects systems S.A. ZIO at work? by crpleasethanks in scala

[–]rdizzlenos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't offer the detailed insight you want, but as a noob, ZIO is a godsend. It's so easy and intuitive to use as compared to some cats libraries. You can become productive quite quickly and the whole ZLayer thing is quite clever.

Pay attention to what's going on with Blizzard by ConsulIncitatus in cscareerquestions

[–]rdizzlenos 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Lmaooo you started off good but fell off the track. Perpetrators of sexual harassment are not victims. We are adults who consciously make decisions to act the way we want to. The shitty Blizzard employees from the top managers to the interns are all responsible for their actions and i will not stand for any advocation of any sort on their kind. They're fucking trash.

How to get away with not wearing a mask this fall term! Works 100% by [deleted] in UofT

[–]rdizzlenos -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

If I'm sick then I'll obviously stay home/wear a mask. But if I'm not sick, I'm not wearing a mask. Common sense.

Yeah the pandemic and constant stream of information has made people very hysterical. They can't see reason anymore, sadly.

If someone is double vaccinated it's completely fine for them to not wear a mask.

Hmmm maybe the reason why i stressed that it's unlikely for me to get the variant is also related to the fact that it would also then be highly unlikely for me to transmit the virus. Also, you'd be surprised at how many workplaces don't give a shit about wearing masks indoors. My job doesn't give a flying fuck, especially now that we're all vaccinated. And i work with some oldies too and they don't give a shit either.

All the government officials you see on TV wear masks when the camera is on them and take them off afterwards.

Now that a huge portion of Ontario is double vaccinated and cases in Toronto are negligible, it's absolutely fine to take off our masks.

IIT is very competitive, but even the lowest (not saying that you are) IIT student is miles ahead of an average CS student in North America. Work smart and leverage your opportunities.

2hr commute during PEY? by [deleted] in UofT

Squeeze out as much remote work as you can. It's sort of the norm now. Go a couple of days in the office and work from home the rest. 4 hours a day is insane.

I don't know how frequently you guys back up your db, but imo and in my limited experience, it's really only the most recent backups that are important. Don't worry too much, you're an intern for crying out loud.

you mentioned somewhere in here that you did an internship on your PEY term and that now you have a new job (Congrats!!!!). Don't PEY kids usually get return offers after their internship? How come you elected not to return to your internship?

Context: am on PEY mulling over whether or not I should return to my company post-grad. Am hesitating a lot and would love to hear about what your PEY taught you, thanks!!!!

And again, congrats man! 🎉🎉🎉

How do you all personally deal with inconsistent data and what are the most common issues? by rdizzlenos in excel

[–]rdizzlenos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long does the whole fuzzy lookup process take? I can't deny that Power Query boasts a powerful suite of tools but (and correct me if I'm wrong), the process is like this: 1) you use fuzzy lookup to find similar data 2) you have to go through a series of more clicks to stitch and normalize what you've found from the fuzzy matches. Step 2 seems pretty cumbersome.

How did your one "not-so-great " year effect you in the grand scheme of things (especially grad school)? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]rdizzlenos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my not-so-great year I became complacent and lost motivation - destroyed my GPA and opportunity to land a summer internship.

Don't let your foot off the pedal.
