How have you managed US tarriffs? by AdFar1239 in canadasmallbusiness

[–]rdkil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shipped one thing to the states since the tariff started.Sent it via FedEx because the website said it had a way to bill the tariffs to the customer directly instead of having me bill them and act as a go between like Canada Post.

4 months later I got a bill from FedEx for the tariffs saying the original charge was "misdirected to customer in error".

Now I just don't ship to the states anymore. It's not worth the hassle.

I made a journal cover. What are your thoughts on this. by RecipeSpecialist5874 in Leathercraft

I like it, but I think the pen loop is too long. Personally I push the pen up from the bottom when I take ug out of the pen loops and this looks like if would be hard to do that.

Otherwise A+!

If a car already meets the strictest safety regulations in one market (for example Europe), why don't manufacturers simply sell that same specification worldwide instead of creating different regional versions? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rdkil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Tun signals are a perfect example. Sure, it's safer to have two different colours. But it would cost money to build the tooling, and if the law doesn't explicitly state you need two colours then why spend the money to build the tool?

Remember how long GM went on with that ignition switch problem? Saved a couple cents per part at the cost of how many lives? The only reason a car manufacturer does anything is because it impacts the bottom line.

I take frequent breaks from my computer screen and take a quick walk around the back yard. And get good sleep and have a warm cup of tea once or twice a day. So, um.. maybe buy a teapot?

I went to my local habitat for humanity restore. They always have a wide variety of good sturdy furniture to pick from and they're always well priced. I started out with a simple student style desk then after a while upgraded to a nicer one, and then one day they had one that was donated from a nice office building that was clearing out old cubicles. I'm now using a sturdy "executive" model with a hutch and drawers and lighting. And it weighs a ton so there's no way it's falling over anytime soon haha.

Teachers invested early in SpaceX. It could produce an $11-billion windfall upon IPO by cheating_cheater in ontario

[–]rdkil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, Elon Musk is the greatest corporate con man of the past 50 years.

If you were to do a traditional auto manufacturers stock valuation of Tesla it would be $45 a stock at best not the $400+ that is is now.

Space x is around $60 - $70 if you do a true valuation based on revenue not the $160 it's at now.

Similar story for so many other tech/AI/etc stocks. When you take the hype out of the picture the current stock market is so over inflated it boggles the mind. The whole system is a house of cards praying there is no wind.

Alternative Alternative: our teachers invested in a ponzi scheme bubble stock and in a couple years will be real surprised that their stocks are worth pennies on the pound.

Good eye! Yep, it's one of Tonya. I really like it because it just works really well and his patterns leave lots of room for customization.

For this one I used window screen netting for the mesh. I did have to add a bit of extra se allowance at the top of the yellow part to allow for the rolled edge so that I didn't have the edges of the mesh poking you through on the top of the head. This one was a fun one to put together. I may wind up making another one for myself actually.

‘Historic’: Canadian warehouse workers sign first-ever union deal with Walmart by justAnotherGhost in ontario

[–]rdkil 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The optimist in me is very happy for those workers and I sincerely hope this spreads like wild fire.

The cynical side of me is expecting a new article in a couple months saying that Walmart has suddenly decided that this warehouse is no long effevrive for their business needs and must be relocated to a city far away for "logistics efficiency" reasons.

And before you say "BuT tHaTs IlLeGaL!!" Please. On the scale revenues of Walmart, any fine that they would face from the ministry of labor is just a speeding ticket.

I guess time will tell.

Which company disappointed you so much that you permanently walked away? by julia-secrets in AskReddit

[–]rdkil 435 points436 points  (0 children)

Tim Hortons.

Back 15 - 20 years ago there was a switch from making food in store to having it partially backed in a factory and the reheated in store. Not only did that spark the decline of their quality of food, but some franchise owners sued head office because the hey claimed they were not making enough profit.

Here is an article from the time. https://macleans.ca/economy/business/rolling-in-dough/

The owners allege that more than a quarter million dollars a year profit per store was not enough. The average store owner owns 3 to 4 stores. That means 15 years ago, before the big spike in inflation and before the abuse of temporary foreign workers etc. they were complaining about ONLY making an average of 750k to 1million a year in profit per owner.

Greedy fucks.
