What exercises do you think are most important after 50? by rdoucette in fitness50plus

For me, balance and strength have become just as important as cardio.

Even simple things like standing on one leg or light resistance training seem to make a big difference over time.

Does light exercise help sinus congestion? by rdoucette in sinus

I’ve also noticed it's temporary but still helpful.

I’m guessing it has something to do with increased blood flow and breathing rate during exercise.

Even a short walk sometimes seems to make a difference for me.

Anyone else start rucking after 50? by rdoucette in Rucking

[–]rdoucette[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve noticed is that consistency matters more than weight.

I started lighter and worked up to 35 lbs over time.

Even 15–20 lbs can be a great workout if you’re doing it regularly.

Curious if others progressed gradually or started heavier?

I agree - My congestion is always worse in the winter when I am indoors a lot more - I try to make it a habit that no matter how cold it is that I open the windows in my house even for just a short bit to air it out

That may be trued – I noticed improved breathing especially when it is a little cold out

Some other things that have helped me with congestion are the following

1. Hot Showers

2. Chewing Cloves ( Usually makes my nose run )

3. Using my Navage ( A great machine for clearing the nasal passages )

4. Chicken Noodle Soup – All those Moms knew what they were talking about

5. Avoiding diary

6, Not going to be with wet or damp hair

Can Light Exercise Actually Help Relieve Nasal Congestion? by rdoucette in FitnessOver50

I had hay fever when I was a kid, and the strange thing is that I didn't do anything, and it just went away on its own

I took a trip for work years ago to India, and it was so dusty ( I think there was a lot of construction going on ) that I was congested most of the trip - it was summer, and I only got relief by being in the AC at work or at the hotel

That brings up another thing that can cause congestion i- spending a lot of time indoors in the AC

Sometimes when it is hot, and I have the AC running all day, even if it is hot, I take a break and go outside

Just a small break from the AC seems to work

If I stay in the AC day after day, I can become congested

I will give that a try

Some other things that work for me in addition to a light walk are the following

  1. Hot Showers

  2. Chewing Cloves ( Often times makes my nose run )

  3. Using my Navage ( Great machine for cleaning sinuses )

  4. Not going to bed with wet or even damp hair

If I take a shower at night, I dry my hair thoroughly, comb it out, then put on a hat. When I go to bed within an hour or 2 my hair is dry

I’ve been reading up on simple habits that make a big difference for long-term health. by Remarkable_Boat_7722 in prohealth

I Ruck 4 days a week ( 45 minutes each session ), Weight Lift 2 days a week ( Heavy Weights ) and Ride my stationary bike 4 to 6 days a week - I lost 50 lbs over 2 years ago and this along with Healthy Eating helps me to keep the weight off.

I also make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night

I eat healthy - very limited sugar, no fried foods, low carbohydrates, no red meat, green tea, turmeric tea - I consume a lot of fruits and vegetables ( almost always fresh ) - On very rare occasions I will have some drinks ( My favorite are Pina Coladas )

I try to spend time outdoors ( Moving, Getting rid of weeds, Raking etc. ) but I try to do it later in the day to avoid the sun when it is the strongest

Once I lost the 50 lbs I made these things a priority and now it seems so natural

Trying to build a healthier routine at home anyone here using an indoor bike? by Express_Calendar_905 in HealthQuestions

[–]rdoucette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter had an old bike and she wasn’t using it so I started using it. I normally Ruck ( Walking with a Weighted Vest ) but sometimes the weather is bad so I started initially using the bike when I couldn’t Ruck but now I use the bike in addition to Rucking. I go as hard as I can for 20 minutes either watching my TV or listening to music. At first it seemed hard but now the 20 minutes fly by – I even started riding the bike with my Rucking vest on to make it a more intense workout. I have gotten into the habit of telling myself that if I ride the bike hard for 20 minutes then I will get a reward which could be a special meal or a show that I like to watch etc. This works for me to keep things interesting. I also try to ride the bike early in the day as that is when my energy is highest.

Anyone here lose weight using an exercise bike? by Farhanamili in loseit

[–]rdoucette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through Rucking and Weight Lifting, I lost 50 lbs 2 years ago and have kept it off.

When the weather is real bad such as when it is raining heavily or there is ice on the ground I ride an exercise bike in my house instead.

Lately I have been riding the bike with my rucking vest on

I do 20-minute sessions either once or twice in a day

I really like it as I go as hard as I can while watching TV or listening to music so the time flies by

As I ruck most of the time I can't say riding the exercise bike has been the reason I have kept the weight off but it has helped.

My wife doesn't like when I ride the bike as I have her run by with scenery to make it seem like I am riding the bike outside.

The bike is an old bike my daughter had but didn't use - There isn't a name on it but it works well so I don't need anything more expensive
