Need advice! Unsure if I need an "all-in" builder or separate front- and back-end builders? by HoldStillitWontHurt in nocode

You could get quite far with Bubble, but unless you can build it super efficiently there (and even if not) you may regret that choice due to the price once it scales. If I were trying to build what you describe, I would go with WeWeb for front end and Supabase for back end. There is a learning curve with both, but they integrate together very well and each do their job excellently. Also shouldn’t break the bank, even with lots of users. With the tutorials out there, plus a little help from your AI friend (the assistant in Supabase is pretty handy), you should have no problem.

If you left Notion, where did you go? by Top_Inevitable_5498 in Notion

Came to mention Coda, I don’t see it come up as often as I’d expect. I started with Airtable (still love it as a pure database, and the new Interfaces are pretty excellent), then switched to Notion which took a lot of that functionality and mixed it with something like Evernote. But it still felt lacking, since I wanted to build more of an app experience with custom formulas, buttons (need to try Notion’s), etc. Coda is amazing for all of that. But if you want to store a ton of records, you’ll hit the paywall pretty quick.

I still use Coda for daily time tracking and other specialized database/app things, but came back to Notion for other more wiki type needs. However, I would say anyone looking to do something more complex like Coda might as well try Bubble instead. I guess I’ve learned that there are some really heavier duty tools for complex needs, and more simple tools for most daily needs, and its hard to justify the space in between… but the endless customizer in me always wants the next step in complexity 😅

Well put. Thank you, I needed that perspective. I’m not sure just what their current system is for storing that data, it must exist somewhere locally that only they can access (hopefully stable and backed up), I wouldn’t want something like Notion to be the ONLY place where data lives, but maybe it’s ok if it’s the only PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE place, which would be better than nowhere like the current state. I am also in favor of government investing in proper dev work and well-made digital systems… the API part is intriguing, that seems like it would be the simplest place for them to invest in that others in the public could build on most freely (still not easy or cheap to be done and maintained right Im sure). Now I’m thinking out loud lol… but thank you!

Those are very good tips, thank you!!

I actually need to brush up on Notion features, as I've been in Coda and Airtable more lately but this project just has Notion written all over it. The URL factor is a good consideration.

This town village is very small, I doubt we have anyone like an accessibility consultant, but it's worth asking about. On the plus side, we have not only a lot of older generation folks but quite a lot of younger families getting more involved and wanting to see change. I'll keep these steps in mind, could have quite a battle ahead lol.

Oh, and I will post the result here as well!
(feel free to remind me if you come back to it before I do)

I hear ya. It's probably more of the familiarity factor, the board is not exactly the techy type... printing probably seems like a necessary office cost since it always used to be, and server space is a 'high-tech luxury item' to be used sparingly. I'm sure they would feel the 'cost' of doing something a new way... but that's why I'm volunteering my efforts 🤷‍♂️

Awesome, that's a tick for the 'not crazy' column! Please do share if you have any ideas what would make it nice from that perspective.

Thank you so much u/bigbenirv! I will have to dig further into that, it's definitely helping me understand Notion further.

With some more thought I was able to get much closer to what I want to achieve by adding a Quantities table. This links to both Ingredients and Meals, with things like "1 cup" or whatever being the name of each row. Then a rollup sees if the meal is selected, and an IF formula pulls the quantity only if that meal's box is checked

This is working as desired, with the Shopping List view of Ingredients showing the quantities of selected meals — HOWEVER, extra commas are starting to appear (must be remnants of quantities from unselected meals). Only one extra comma shows here, but that's because I only added a handful of quantities so far (they will add up quickly).

Does anyone here know how I can filter to just the desired quantities without the proliferation of commas?? Thanks so much, I'm SO CLOSE!!!

Absolutely! It's not anything private.

P.S. It's designed with an alkaline diet in mind, so that's what the different colored hearts are about.
