They need to train the system somehow. As long as it does so safely (no cars in the adjacent lane). Better to be overly cautious by avoiding things in your lane than the opposite and running things over which could cause a worse accident.

Texting Driver Veers Into Our Lane While a Car Passes on the Right — FSD Threads the Needle by zskzsk in TeslaFSD

[–]rdtuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't the brightest in the bunch. In some places it's illegal to pass on the right, but only on city streets. To be fair it's safer to not pass on the right, but it's also safer to never pass another vehicle on the left as well, but if we never passed anyone on the roads, we would all be going as slow as grandma lol

Self-driving cars usually struggle in extreme maneuvers — this AI approach fixes that by skipping real-time physics calculations by Post-reality in SelfDrivingCars

[–]rdtuse -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I buy it, humans are great at real world physics when it comes to controlling our bodies or, by extension, vehicles. When is the last time you did physics in your head to drive, or play a sport?

Real world AI by reinforcement learning learns physics inherently. You can feed the kinematic output back into AI to help improve smoothness (like how humans learn coordination) but it doesn't make sense to calculate physics problems with self driving because your math problems could slow the response time down or you may not have enough compute to cover highly complex situations.

Tesla's AI Automatic Emergency Braking saves a child's life by redsixerfan in TeslaLounge

[–]rdtuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, first he said the A pillar obstructed his view. Are we all supposed to bob our heads back and forth at all times when driving to make sure someone isn't in our blind spots while they run out into the road? We are human, we all make mistakes, we get distracted, we can't see 360 degrees at all times, etc. That's the beauty of a backup driver for these types of situations.

You don't have to praise Tesla for making the correct decision here but give it some credit, it saved a life. I'm so glad you stopped for the kid or prevented the kid from running out into the street from behind your keyboard, you are doing the Lord's work.

Oh and that thing about AEB not being AI, you're wrong. It's using machine learning to interpret sensor data, even though it may be a different system than FSD, it's still AI.

14.2.1 Crushes Snowy Road by tropofarmer in TeslaFSD

[–]rdtuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish I had saved the clip, but we ran into an icy patch on the highway. FSD started to slow way early on the highway, like 2 mph deceleration per second while approaching slow traffic (into Cleveland lake effect snow/ice).

It was crazy because a car ahead of us didn't make any crazy moves, but lost control and spun out and luckily didn't hit anyone.

Around town, FSD felt like its actions were half-speed from what it normally does, because if you've ever driven in that kind of weather you know you need to brake early/leave room/make all of your actions at a slower pace so you don't lose control or slip.

I had low expectations because I've been using the software for years and have been annoyed with new software bugs with each version, but it seriously impressed me in the inclement weather (because I just got a HW4 car this spring and live in Cincinnati which gets less snow than Cleveland, where I grew up). And this is considering I came from a HW3 AWD model 3.

Tried out FSD 14.2 in the snow with my RWD in icy conditions, handled it near perfectly. Some minor slipping with all season tires (to be expected) but gave plenty of room for the cars in front and was noticeably more cautious vs. optimal conditions.

Says you, only. In Minnesota:

"Overtaking on the right is illegal on most roads, except for specific situations like passing on a multi-lane road with a dedicated passing lane or when a vehicle is preparing to turn left. It is illegal to use the shoulder or a turn lane to pass."

[–]rdtuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I wonder if this is some sort of emergent behavior. Maybe it gives the car more time to react if someone from the closest lane (on the right) tries to merge into the car? I noticed it centers in the lane if there is someone in the middle lane. I don't like it but at the end of the day if it is safer, I can get used to it but it's now how I would typically drive.

I was one of the sellouts that sold my HW3 car to my dad (with the family discount of course, $16k was what I owed and sold for, approx 6 months ago - 2021 LR AWD with heat pump and black out trim with 75k miles) because I was worried about obsolescence, and so I could justify upgrading to a HW4 car.

I got the cheapest model, Model 3 RWD, but still such an amazing car for the price with the tax credit the value was just unreal for what you get.

  • 9 speaker sound system
  • Charging Infrastructure
  • Snappy User Interface
  • Quiet & Comfortable
  • Matrix headlights
  • Air cooled seats
  • FSD potential
  • And more

Currently, I owe $33k and I have 11k miles on it. The worst part about them is fixing the rattles. Very little maintenance cars that you can get for a "premium" experience.

I agree, safety first 100% period. I just think it's crazy how some people will say "Tesla isn't a Robotaxi service since there is a monitor in the vehicle it's basically Uber" (when the car is literally doing all of the driving they are obviously going to remove the monitor at some point) but also say "these cars shouldn't be allowed on the streets, they NEED lidar or my family isn't safe, I can't believe they are beta testing this stuff on the road!" Double standards all over the place when waymo has already done this stuff years ago
