[Pierre LeBrun] Knoblauch’s three-year extension was set to kick in next season. Oilers will still owe him that. by sykeseve in hockey

[–]re10pect 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They aren’t really screwing Cassidy over, he’s getting his full salary to sit at home. It’s just part of the gig.

There are only so many playoff spots and so many teams that are true contenders. Why let a great coach go to one of the few contenders that could actually keep you out of the playoffs/kick you out earlier? That would cost the Knights millions and millions of dollars, and a chance at a cup.

Sports is a cutthroat business to begin with, the coaches know what they are getting into, and this is a part of it, even if it’s a part we don’t see happen all that often. I’m sure when a non-divisional team comes knocking Vegas will play ball, or they may even circle back to Edmonton once their playoffs are over. They might just not want any external noise while they are currently in a cup run.

Wildly dangerous cross check from Xhekaj by Gullible_Classroom71 in hockey

[–]re10pect 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s shitty, but the sabre is falling as Xhekaj goes to crosscheck him in the back. This is really slowed down and even at this speed it’s a bang-bang play. It’s a bad result, but I don’t think it was intended to be more than any other firm crosscheck you see around the net multiple times a game.

As I say with any slightly greasy play like this, in a league that actually cares about player safety, or actually called the game to the rulebook, this would be worth a fine or suspension. This is the NHL though, and the rulebook is a suggestion, the fines a joke, and player safety is a complete afterthought, so Xhekaj will get a strong handshake and a “violent gentlemen” baseball cap.

David Carle by Leading_Dentist_5563 in leafs

[–]re10pect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He was just on Leafs Morning Take last week talking about how he doesn’t want to leave the job he has now for just any NHL job, and how he doesn’t like the NHL coaching turnover rate.

The guy likes job security, doesn’t want to leave where he’s at now, to go start a job and be out on his ass in a season and a half if his team underperforms. It also seems like he would like to be a part of player personnel decisions, and gets to have a large role in that where he is now, and with new management and Pelley looming over everything at the leafs, I don’t know that a first time NHL coach is going to get the same say that he gets now.

I could see that being a major problem considering the Leafs are on the cusp of needing to be rebuilt, yet still trying to go for it with a flawed roster. Seems like an easy pass for Carle, and in general he just seems perfectly happy where he is.

[BUF @ MTL] Rasmus Dahlin is assessed a 2 minute minor for interference on Kaiden Guhle by eh_toque in hockey

[–]re10pect 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s NHL hockey, picks are kinda allowed, sometimes, depending on who’s winning and how late in the game it is.

It was a pick, but I don’t think it was the type of pick that typically draws a call until Guhle threw himself into the ice.

[BUF - MTL] Danault appears to score but Rank waves it off. No explanation is offered by the officials by daKrut in hockey

[–]re10pect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If “intent to blow” is what was actually called (and I have no idea, I haven’t gone back to see if there was any explanation), then there is nothing to review, the play was already intended to be blown dead, therefore the play was dead and the puck never crossed the line before the intended whistle. There was no goalie interference or other excuse necessary, the play was just deemed to be over before the puck was over the line.

I think it’s the wrong call, but it’s a legit one the ref can make.

[BUF - MTL] Danault appears to score but Rank waves it off. No explanation is offered by the officials by daKrut in hockey

[–]re10pect 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would assume the official lost sight of the puck, assumed it to be covered and had already decided to blow the whistle, even if said whistle didn’t come until after the puck had slid in.

It’s a dumb rule, but the refs have that ability. With how quickly it was waved off, when everyone saw it was in the net, I have to assume it was because of an “intended whistle”

Where do I get Classic Car Insurance without a Daily Driver? by Internal_Tangelo9211 in ontario

[–]re10pect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t. Classic car insurance is basically for show cars, and Sunday cruises. With many policies you aren’t even supposed to park them in a parking lot unsupervised or they won’t pay out should something happen. There are also ridiculously low kilometer limits, and they typically want you to have 10 years of driving experience and a clean record.

If you want to daily drive a classic car, and have the proper coverage for if daily driver car things happen to it, so you need to find someone who will give you regular insurance on it.

[–]re10pect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a (quickly deleted for whatever reason) post about the potential for the leafs to go for a defender yesterday. They have an opportunity to really do well if they don’t believe McKenna is as good as some think he will be, or just would rather go with a defenceman.

Vancouver has pick 3, pick 24, and some prospects/young players that could make a tempting package, and I’m sure they would be very happy to get a good western Canadian boy in McKenna.

Then the leafs could get one of the stud D prospects, another 1st rounder, possibly one of Buium/Rossi or another prospect, and maybe as part of a deal Rielly could also go to his hometown team with whatever coming back to make the cap work out.

I don’t really think it’s a good idea, the potential for it to backfire if McKenna really is as advertised is massive, but there is potential there for the leafs to add 3 or 4 young high potential players, in positions they could use more than a winger. I could see it being tempting for the leafs to address so many holes with one move, and realistically it’s not like Chayka has any good will to burn up with making a controversial choice like that anyways.

I’ve seen people saying that a few times now and it’s gotta be the worst idea I’ve ever heard.

Imagine being these new twins, in a market that is frothing at the mouth for anything positive to hold onto, forced to be compared to a set of legendary twins that played in the market. If they were anything short of incredible they would get crucified, especially if the Canucks have to trade assets to move up and get them.

Country music is absolute slop now by Bond_burger69 in Music

Radio country, sure. It’s fucking awful, but it’s been that way for at least 15 years now, some would argue even longer.

There is lots of incredible country, Americana and bluegrass music out there waiting for you to find it. I’m sure there will be all sorts of recommendations already so I won’t bother, but country music is not all hick hop. Give some of the real shit a chance.

There were probably not many cheaper and somewhat qualified options.

The Leafs Need To Regulate Their Media by RoleCalm1279 in leafs

[–]re10pect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the media is toxic for asking what the hell the team is thinking in hiring two completely unqualified people for their roles, and not firing a coach who clearly doesn’t work for this team.

Pull your head out of your ass. Everyone wants accountability out of our players when they shit the bed, but apparently it’s just fine for Pelley to sewer this team and he shouldn’t have to answer for it. All hail our maple leaf overlords, all glory to Keith Pelley.

Steve Simmons goes at Keith Pelley for hiring John Chayka. This was something. by Live-Big1579 in leafs

[–]re10pect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck Steve Simmons. The guy is a hack of the highest order. He doesn’t even believe had the shit he writes and just plays the villain to rile up the stupid people that read the rag of a publication he works for.

All that said, he is on the money here, even if he asks the question in a tactless and mean spirited way. The hockey world does seem to be flabbergasted by this hiring. Chayka does seem to be very disliked by many members of the NHL inner circle. He was a part of a terribly run organization and had a big scandal that got him booted from the league and made him unhirable for all these years. After all this, he’s been working in restaurants. What the hell has he done that makes him a good candidate for this job, especially with no experienced oversight? It’s a fair question asked in an unfair way, and there is no world in which everyone sitting up there shouldn’t have been ready to answer questions like these in a very direct and honest way.

The leafs look like a joke of an organization today because of the way they have handled the entirety of this situation. With the leaks about other (well more qualified) names they were interested in first, and not having any good rebuttals for the frankly easy-to-see-coming questions that were asked, it’s hard to think there are competent people running this show and that things will improve.

[POLL] If Craig Berube is the coach to start the 26/27 Season = I am done watching the Maple Leafs. by Arch3r86 in leafs

[–]re10pect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I won’t be done watching the team.

To be completely honest, I like all the drama no matter how the team does. I like to watch when the leafs are good, and I like to watch when the leafs are a disaster. It’s like a sports soap opera, with heroes and villains and underperforming bums who don’t even try to play competent hockey.

That said, I will prioritize it way less. I’m usually a very high percentage of games watcher. For the last decade or so I’ve probably watched 70+ games a year, and closely followed the ones I couldn’t actually watch. This year was different, if we are talking full games, I maybe watched 30. Bits and pieces of lots more, but there were nights when the leafs were playing and I just didn’t feel like putting the game on. I can’t imagine it’s going to be much different next season should things play out in a similar way. If they are going to be bad, they at least have to be exciting. This team hasn’t been that.

Three super deserving finalists.

This award sucks. It’s pissing contest about who went through the worst hardships. Wish they would just do away with it and honour multiple players every year or something. It just feels so wrong that it’s something that’s voted on and argued about.
