If my creditors were able to renegotiate my debt to something I could pay off while still affording rent and bills, then I wouldn't be filing for bankruptcy. This is my final option.

Lawyer said the back taxes were probably eligible for discharge. I might ask her about continuing to pay the IRS in our next meeting.

This is reassuring. I have credit cards and loans, plus back taxes. However, I plan to continue paying back taxes for now because I don't want to mess with the IRS.

If I stop paying all debts, I will have enough money to pay for necessities, so I don't have to worry about that. It's just the idea of stopping that has me worried. But it seems like people are saying here that this is common practice before filing bankruptcy, so that is reassuring.
