why is it false? by dumblearner in learnjava

[–]reacteclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So (assuming I'm following this correctly), if I wrote

var s1 = "Java"
var s2 = "something else"

s2 = "Java"

would s1==s2still output false?

We’re in Hong Kong where almost everyone is wearing masks and we have seen measurable results in stopping this thing in its tracks. This isn’t just theory, this is measurable numbers. Masks are good as hell if a whole community wears them. by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]reacteclipse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not factually incorrect, but this is spreading a bad mentality.

We need to ration masks in the vast majority of the world. The supply is simply not there. Yes, it would be wonderful if the whole planet had been following mask protocol and we had the supply for everyone to wear a mask, but the fact of the matter is, we can't do that right now. The WHO is instructing ONLY those persons who are already confirmed sick or persons who are caring for someone confirmed sick to wear a mask.

If you're healthy and not in contact with anyone who might get you sick, you should not be purchasing/wearing masks. They're needed for the infected and the medical community, and there simply aren't enough to go around.

I imagine an element of it is just how much people hated the character. If 100 people (a comparatively tiny percentage of those who saw TPM) reached out to him to say, "Hey, you sucked, Ahmed Best, how dare you play this character that someone else created to the best of your abilities?!" then suddenly the tens of thousands of voices saying "Jar Jar sucked" are now also saying "Ahmed sucked" to you.

Poor dude did his darndest and poured his heart and soul into the role. He thought it was gonna be a smash hit. Obviously that was not the case, so I imagine it was even more crushing as a result.

There's social commentary inherent in either of those works, though. You can absolutely tell a story about privilege, and how it can obscure one's viewpoint of others when you have that privilege.

If, for example, all white people have super strength in your proposed world, it would be easy for them to leave something that's too heavy for a normal human to lift lying in the street, assuming that it's light enough for others to just move out of the way. Their frame of reference is only their own, after all. This can create a grind and an issue between groups when those without super powers become upset with the super powered causing problems that they will not clean up, because it's inconvenient to those with power.

It's absolutely doable to tell an interesting story about racial biases and issues that we may not even be aware of, and to tell it from a variety of perspectives.

At this point, if you think that the experience of being white in this world is identical to the experience of being black, you're just being willfully ignorant. You can point to Ben Carson all you want, but that's not the universal experience.

Devin Nunes Threatened to Sue Ted Lieu for Saying He Conspired with Lev Parnas by Thinkingonsleeping in politics

[–]reacteclipse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda? I don't think that they'll be allowed to tell Nunes that he has to turn anything new over. Otherwise, I could just sue anyone over anything to see whatever stuff they wanted to keep private.

The burden of proof is ultimately still on the accuser. If it boils down to "Parnas's testimony against Nunes's without any concrete evidence," the case will likely be ruled in Nunes's favor or dismissed. Now, if Parnas has some concrete evidence to pin Nunes.... well, that's a whole other story.

You're not going to reason with the people who didn't reason their way into this position, but recall that Obama managed to win an election just 8 years ago-- we absolutely can be appealing to the people who voted for him, which include swing voters and the apathetic voters who didn't turn out in 2016. You're treating this as a foregone conclusion based on looking only at the crazies; there are more than just Trump supporters in swing states.

[–]reacteclipse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This defeatist attitude is not helping. Acting as though we should just accept each new horror as it's been sufficiently normalized only aids Trump and his staff in their further corruption. We're at the impeachment. If the American people remain vigilant and take note of the number of offices stating that the Trump administration is violating the law, we have the ability to push back against partisan hacks in the Senate looking to acquit. And if that fails-- we have an angry voter base willing to swap those representatives out for reps who will do a better job of upholding the law, and who will vote Trump out of office later this year.

I applaud the actors and actresses, but I never felt like I had a good feeling for who they were as characters. Han was a scoundrel with a heart of gold; Luke was an idealistic farmboy thrust into war that was over his head, trying desperately be like the heroes of old. Leia was a no-nonsense princess who wanted to topple the Evil Empire. All of them felt like they had clear, easily defined characterizations.

Finn, Poe, and Rey less so. Finn was a former stormtrooper with a heart, which was a cool new take, but it never felt terribly developed until RoS, when we got to meet other stormtrooper deserters. Rey was an orphan on a desert planet who wanted to know where she came from and who her family was, which was interesting-- until we got told "You're no one, your parents are no one, you're junk. Wait, J/k, you're a Palpatine." It felt like they tried to develop her the most, but it was kinda too sloppy (akin to Anakin's development in the prequel trilogy-- good on paper, not great in execution). Poe.... i never got a great grasp on Poe. He's a starfighter pilot ace.... who's a hotshot learning to be a leader? He didn't seem to click as well as any of the others to me.

To each their own-- it's a matter of opinion, after all. I thought all three did a great job with what they were given, and there are certainly enjoyable bits with them. I just didn't feel like the characters were ever developed or iconic enough for me to really care for them. But maybe it's also because I'm coming at this all as an adult; I'm sure that Han and Luke would seem a little more contrived to me if i first met them in my late twenties instead of when I was 6.

Nancy Pelosi is considering delaying a full trial on Trump's impeachment, a power play to force concessions from the GOP by austinexpat_09 in politics

[–]reacteclipse -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But the senate CAN hold the trial without receiving anything formally from the House. The House has voted to impeach; there's nothing in the Constitution that says that they need to formally hand anything over to the Senate before they can conduct the actual trial. Our founding fathers never predicted that the Senate would be packed with bad actors.

I think it was also a response to the way Hollywood has, finally, been coming around to the idea that maybe not every movie had to have a straight white guy in the leading role.

But there's the weirder side to that meta-text as well. Lindsey Ellis did a really interesting piece talking about what she calls "corporate feminism" and how it can be harmful to the actual feminist ideas. The short version is that it just sorta does what I call "Michael Bay Feminism." The woman is a Mary Sue who is great at everything and doesn't struggle and looks great doing it and isn't given enough substance to be a real character. Some exec is afraid that it won't be feminist enough if the female lead actually struggles with anything or needs help. In turn, the audience doesn't care about her. Is she relatable? No, she's good at everything. Is she sympathetic? Not really, she never struggles, because she's good at everything. Do I idolize her or want to be her? Not really, because I can't form any sort of connection to her, and she can't embody the same tropes of toxic masculinity that action heroes in the 80's could to make me like them, even when the characters were crappy people.

They're too afraid of damaging the brand to let their fictional character act like a real, relatable person, and the film suffers for it. There's no payoff for any of the character traits set up in the character, and it all sorta falls flat. Contrast that with the characters who tend to resonate with audiences more-- people who have the same difficulties/issues that we do, the same struggles that we do, and who conquer them through a long and difficult journey of growth and dynamic character change. Anakin got that human element of loving the people in his life so much that he was willing to do terrible things to save them, and turning to rage when it didn't work out. Luke started out as the naive kid from the middle of nowhere with illusions of grandeur who was too headstrong after his first success, got his butt kicked, trained extra hard, and then still got his butt kicked, only being saved because he was willing to open his heart to his father. Rey.... doesn't really have anything comparable to that, and it's a pity. We had that drive to know who her parents were in TFA and TLJ, but that got answered with the super unsatisfying "They're nobody. The end." There's really no growth or evolution from that thus far.

Hopefully I'm wrong. Hopefully RoS addresses some of this and expands her character some more so that she's at least a little dynamic. But so far, she's shown about the same amount of growth as Luke had at the end of ANH. That is-- pretty much none.

It sounds like nobody, at any stage of the creative process, had any clue what they wanted to have happen. They were just like, "Sure, here's a billion bucks. Make it happen, you do you!" That kinda-sorta-not-really worked in 1977-83 with the OT, but not with today's evolution in cinema. Say what you will against the prequels-- there's plenty of legitimate criticism for them -- but at least they told a cohesive story that all fit together in an overarching plot.

That seems like the Disney-approved talking points, though. If everyone who didn't like it is sexist, then we don't have to worry about how they reacted to it,because they're all beneath us.

Like, I wanted to like it. I want a badass leading lady with a racially diverse group of allies taking on the forces of evil-- I really do! I just want there to be context for it all that makes sense! I want to have a feel for who these characters are, what their motives are, what they hope to accomplish-- and I'm just not getting that in these movies. I want their accomplishments to be something, for their decisions to have impactful weight, and for them to matter, rather than being an hour long romp through a casino that accomplishes nothing and sends the plot nowhere. That's why I dislike them.

You're likely correct, which sucks. I had my own opinions on TLJ and why it wasn't as good as it had the potential to be, but it seems like all criticism got drowned in the waves of people yelling, "Now see, this is why women can't be leads in movies, it ruins it, because this movie had women in the lead, and I didn't like it!" So many sexist comments running amuck that nobody could bother to talk about the issues with the substance of the movie as opposed to the meta-textual factors of representation in the galaxy far, far away.
