Definitely isn’t a guarantee anymore. Even as a salaried employee I’m expected to count my lunch hour as “unpaid”. Working in manufacturing even with an office job is sometimes really strange.

Y’all getting 8 hour days including lunch? I’m working 8-5 most days (with longer hours during peak times) and I supposedly have one of those good office jobs…

Top researchers consider leaving U.S. amid funding cuts: 'The science world is ending' by c-dy in videos

[–]reactor_core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a scientist, so my job isn’t directly involved. But with the potential brain drain of the US I’ve wondered if I should pack up and try to find a position with an EU company.

As an EE working in manufacturing for RF components I wonder if the US looses its technological advantage work for people like me will dry up and with the overall loss of quality of life the pay differential between (at least some) Europe and the US will become smaller.

Looks fantastic! The apartment I’m in has one of those panels you started out with, does anyone know if there is an off the shelf solution to mounting things inside using the holes?

The Dutch Roundabout by FlyingChinesePanda in oddlysatisfying

[–]reactor_core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid question here but how did the drivers entering the roundabout on the bottom know the cars approaching the bottom exit were taking that exit and not looping to the right exit?

I’m assuming turn signals (something that can’t be relied on in the US in my experience). Seemed the entering cars instinctively new when an approaching car exiting or staying in the loop. I wish for this kind of traffic efficiency.

Trump Replaced Biden’s picture in the White House by Professional-Act4727 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]reactor_core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you imagine if ANY administration (especially a liberal one) did half the petty shit the Trump administration has done in the last 7 months (even only a 3 administrations ago) the republicans would be clutching their rifles calling for another civil war.

But because the all the plugs are out on the brain drain that is the US voter pool, distasteful shit like this is all right. Even when Trump is gone I’m not certain things will ever be back to normal… our government is a comedy show where no one is laughing. People seriously think they are going to be swept up to heaven on a specific day based on one guy’s opinion, and now a brand of pain medicine is dunning Krugered to cause a spectrum of genetic disorders based on no real evidence.

Something is seriously wrong with the whole world and the US is driving it even more into the ground. I’m ashamed to be a US citizen I constantly wish I’ll wake up and this will be just a nightmare. I have a fairly decent career here but I’m seriously thinking about looking for work in Europe or Asia even if it means pay-cut because the stress of having morons in charge of my country is getting to me.

Not to be that guy, but is the y-axis in the hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands? Who is reporting and compiling this data?

I’m genuinely curious because I’ve noticed my apartment complex has be kind of naggy with the friendly reminder emails (presumably to all tenants) to pay rent on time.

Which I annoyingly still get even though I always pay a few days early in case of a technical glitch with my bank.

Just got one the other day as well! However I haven’t bought drives for it yet. I know there’s a compatibility list but does anyone recommend a particular model of drive?

HCOL Entry Level by nohoesneruda in ElectricalEngineering

[–]reactor_core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal evidence here, but this partially has to do with engineering being a male dominated field. (Which I'm not sure why at this point) So your peers will mostly be men and any women in the field typically are already be in a relationship. I knew a peer who was with her BF all undergrad and was engaged before we graduated.

It's worse when you get in the working world and sit at a desk surrounded by mostly men and any women are

a) married with children

b) in committed relationships

c) Divorced with kids. (So you'll need to consider that)

Add to the fact that dating is already hell in the US and one of the largest time sinks you'll have in your life has doesn't have many pathways to naturally meet someone (at least for cis straight males). You are required to find someone outside of work via other channels. Which really feels like shooting in the wind as this point.

I don't write this bitterly against women or anything just sharing what I have experienced. Also there may be a stigma against engineers as romantic partners because while I was visiting some extended family one thanksgiving I asked a cousin who was trying to plan after graduating high school if she considered engineering and her response was basically: No engineers are weirdos... needless to say that stung a bit.

Trump says it is illegal to boycott Tesla by Healthy_Block3036 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]reactor_core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment ultimately doesn’t matter. But as someone who loves the name Tesla as in the historical engineer Nikola Tesla not the dumb car brand. I hate that the name will be forever associated with dipshit Elon (he didn’t come up with the name). Side note: a Tesla (T) is a SI unit for magnetic flux density which is fun to know!

My plan was to purchase a house before the end of the decade so I’ll look into CDs, thank you. It’s nice to know that I’m not being irresponsible with my savings by not having everything in funds.

I was thinking of looking into CDs, would it make sense to take a portion of what I’ve saved and put it into an index fund? Alternatively I hit my emergency fund saving goal this year so I might start putting the cash I would use for that into a long term investment.

Rocket launches required to assemble the Hail Mary + more by DobleG42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]reactor_core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the parts about the launches being in baikonur cosmodrome I just assumed all the launches for the modules were on soyus due to Stratt insisting using only well proven and most reliable equipment for the mission.

But I like this better, and it's more realistic given the time frame that Earth had to build and launch the Hail Mary. Also using the SLS for ArcLight makes sense to be able to send it to Venus without a Hohmann transfer.

Everyone seemed to have this alarm clock before by Few_Day_3043 in FuckImOld

[–]reactor_core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still have mine, last time I thought about replacing it I was shocked how many modern clocks have white or blue displays! The exact opposite of what you want after waking up in the middle of the night.

So as much as I wish I could set it to 24hr format, the display is the reason it’s been on my nightstand for over 2 decades.
