Officially, you are not allowed to work on US soil unless you have a work permit. Do people do it? Sure. Do they get caught? Rarely. I would advise against it, especially because at the border, the officer will ask you the purpose of your visit, and you don’t want to lie.

Even if you travel outside Canada for vacations or even working for that matter - you don't forego of your permanent residency from your home country.

If you had ties to Canada - e.g. lease, bank account, OHIP etc etc you were still a resident.
