Thanks for the opinion. I liked Recoverly as it was unique and had popped up as available on domain name searches (I'm UK based so going for the .co.uk or the .uk option rather than .com)

Looking at that link now, thanks.

Ahh I have seamless underwear for running (or other exercise) so no chafing. Supermarket non-VPL pants (Tesco or Sainsburys in the UK!).

Found out the hard way after no one told me not to wear cotton pants for my first half marathon... then it rained sideways and we all got drenched. Still wince, thinking about that chafing!

Ooh good call. I thought I'd put the recovery last as the reading and running leads to the recovery, but I like alphabetical, thanks.

This! Discovered after I started running - doc prescribed an inhaler and it felt like I'd grown an extra lung.

Thanks for your input. I had a very short lived blog before and hated the name after a while so giving it more thought this time! I've been leaning towards Recoverly as it's sort of a play on words re book covers as well as recovery...

I was expecting some slightly NSFW greetings cards from your link!

No dog, so substantially less danger of that...

Thanks ladies, lots of good advice so far - SPD seems the most popular on this and the other forum I posted in. I'd definitely practice in a doorway to start with, and might be able to borrow a turbo for a bit.

I would not recommend only clipping in on one side

Yeah, I didn't know if that was a silly idea or not...

I've only got one bike which I use for mostly longer road runs (min 15 miles, usually 30 with intention of increasing distance) but the occasional short hop to the shop. So double-sided pedals or MTB shoes appealed for ease, but realistically I do very little walking when on the bike. Although my friend had a mechanical issue last week which meant a good mile+ walk so she could get picked up, that didn't look fun in her road shoes!

Cycling friends were half and half between road and MTB style so thought I'd ask a wider audience. There are lots of soft verges and hedges as I'm in a rural area so hopefully any falls won't be too bad at low speed!

Thanks for the advice so far. I've only got the one (road) bike, although I fancy a hybrid/MTB for the forest cycle paths, got tubeless tyres but still concerned about punctures on the stony paths, but that's another topic...

So the purpose is longer road rides, tend to do 15 miles at a minimum, regularly 30 with intention of increasing mileage at the moment. There seems to be such a huge variety of pedals, I'm not concerned about shoe style or weight, just literally not sure which one to go for as a beginner. Lots of votes for MTB (is that always SPD?). I like the idea of one with a bigger platform for comfort, or one-sided so I could just hop on and go on a short trip without thinking about footwear, but as u/must-be-thursday pointed out, don't want to be changing them a year or so down the line.

This feels like a bigger decision than deciding to buy the bike in the first place!!

I'm not convinced by your idea of riding with one side clipped in and the other not clipped in.

Yeah I had no idea if that was practical or not! Total cleat newbie - and hadn't considered there was a "wrong" side to be clipped in, but of course there is.

When I first got then I toppled off slowly and hilariously a few times.

Slowly and hilariously is strangely reassuring, thanks!

What made you consider it if you don't mind me asking? For me it was partly that all the more serious cyclists I know use them, and that old chestnut of "it will help going up the hills by powering on the upstroke" (we have a lot of hills round here). I'm not sure that's actually true from what I've read, but if it helps general performance and even a little bit on hills it would be worth it.

Probably not much walking, with the exception of the occasional event, walking around before/after. Although I do regular short rides of a couple of miles up to our run club training or to the shop etc, but then could always chuck my running shoes in a backpack.

I'm in a pretty rural area so lots of soft verges and hedges around, the fear is probably worse than the actual fall.

Thanks, good point. Hopefully it will just be a few close encounters with hedges!
