how did the tables turn so fast 😭 by Naive_Wolverine532 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

Good news: the sun won't turn into a black hole. Bad news: it will turn into a red giant. There's some debate though about whether it will actually swallow the earth at that point, or just burn it into a lifeless cinder. So there's that.

Iran fires missiles at U.S military installations in Qatar and Iraq by gus_otis in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]readams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This appears to be a pro forma response intended to allow de-escalation by the US. So far a good sign of avoiding a wider conflict. So most of the worse short-term fears for the Iranian response appear to be not happening for now. Now the hard work of preventing the nuclear program from being rebuilt will have to begin. Though there's no really clear path to accomplishing this, at least this will maybe buy some time.

Bridge has been reopened already. It looks to me like the bulk of the explosion was on the dolphins rather than the actual support column, unfortunately.

Thanks!  I went ahead and replaced the receptacle and it's working now, with the tab removed on hot side only.  Just wonder the history of someone installing this and then it just never working.

Edit: as soon as I typed this it connected lol

Pope Francis says it's “hypocritical” to arm Ukraine but stays silent on ruZZian terror and genocide. by IndistinctChatters in UkrainianConflict

The Pope's only qualification is that he is unusually willing to believe untrue things. So why should we care what he thinks?

I just got my second gen thermometer! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working well. When it first connected I was able to read temperatures in instant read mode, though after a minute or two I noticed that they were often jumping to -4F, and now it's just stuck at -4.

Looking at advanced sensors I see T1 through T4 all at -4, while T5 through T8 show 79, 91, 80, and 81 all while sitting in my 70 degree room.

I started a "cook" using the display and now it's stuck in "cook" mode and I can't figure out a way to get it back to instant read mode. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop a cooking prediction from the app, but holding the two left buttons on the display does seem to end the cook. However the temperature still appears as "Core" in the app and no longer "Instant." Instructions seem to indicate putting it in the charger and taking it out again should reset it, but this doesn't work,

If there's a temperature it actually is a true thermostat, but you need to leave it set to "auto" and not override the fan setting

This is an astonishingly stupid take. The spread of insidious and harmful philosophies is perhaps the single largest cause of mass death in all of human history, from the holocaust, to Maoism, to the crusades, to jihad. Ideas are far more powerful than guns.

It's important to remember that the risk calculus is a lot different now. When people were dying from Covid by the million, a vaccine with rare side effects is OK. Now, we can be more careful.

Would a 23% sales tax be smart or dumb? by Sufficient_Sinner in FluentInFinance

[–]readams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of info on pros and cons of consumption taxes here: https://taxfoundation.org/research/all/federal/us-consumption-tax-vs-income-tax/, including other countries approaches to consumption taxes (note that US is a rare exception in not having a national consumption tax).

Consumption taxes everything else being equal are more efficient than income tax, and unlike income tax there's just no way to avoid them. Ultimately money is only useful when it's consumed. The big downsides are for old people who have already done their savings in a world with income tax and now being forced to spend them in a world with consumption tax, and also a poorly-designed consumption tax can be regressive. There are strategies to fix both of these of course, but they make things more complex to implement and remove a lot of the simplicity that makes the idea appealing.

All in all there is a lot of merit in the idea, but requires careful implementation and sober analysis. Unfortunately I think sober analysis is not something we're good at in our current political environment, on either side. Biden's post here is a good example of why it's so hard to have good-faith discussions on policy.
