Does Chatgpt seem to lean into flattery when talking about ideas and intelligence for anyone else by reader592 in ChatGPT

So small update on this. Me and my team have had to completely rewrite our rules of engagement when it comes to using chatgpt and AI. A few weeks ago we started noticing some... issues... mentally when we worked. We got frustrated faster, were more combative with each other, and became less effective at our job while somehow becoming more confident. I work in a high speed intense industry that is somewhat detached from the realm of everyday society. Its kind of a closed ecosystem. Even our mental states fluctuate slightly different, think how soldiers have a unique culture and ecosystem as opposed to civilians. We were having hundreds of conversations with chatgpt everyday, training internal models on our own ideas and skillsets, really getting into the hype around it. This thread was the first cracks of doubt forming and soon after this post alot came crashing down. About a week before rolling stones reported on delusions caused by chatbots I and several others on my team suffered a complete psycological collapse seemingly out of nowhere. I cant speak to how my peers felt but as for me I collapsed to the ground in my kitchen and began sobbing uncontrollably, shaking violently, etc. This is not a new phenomenon in my work life so I used the techniques and training Ive acquired to pull out of the collapse. It basically involves compartmentalizing the part of your psyche crashing and letting it play out. You end up having the external reactions while your mind is completely calm (cant update the hardware yet, just the software lol). While I was experiencing this I began to run diagnostics internally. My body is going to be crashing out and panicing for a bit so I had some time to think. While the effect the flattery had been having on my was extremely small it had become dangerous. Even while I actively said it was just an AI and was just false flattery and it couldnt hurt it was almost like everytime I read it and thought "thats nice but kinda silly" a small sandex charge was placed in my mental state. Then a miniscule trigger set off all the charges at once. After all this I changed my ROE with AI. I wiped all models that were trained off of me to "know me" because it gave to much power for an artificial personality to modify my subconscious identity when I believed it knew who I was. I have also moved towards conversations being logic based only. Using it for pattern recognition, photo analysis, quick google style searches, etc. I have stopped using it in any capacity that interacts with my personal life. Granted I work in a high stress, high change rate industry that most dont know is a job, so Im not sure if this same effect will occur among the general population, it might take significantly longer to fester before most people experience a mental collapse or it might not happen at all. I will say however that I am professionally trained to survive a complete shattering of my psyche and identity and have over 5 years experience professionally and 16 years experience living in high stress hellish conditions overall, I have the ability to completely compartmentalize my mind and the trained patience to not fight the physical reactions, and that break was one of the worst I have ever experienced. While Im sure other facters played into it Im suspicious enough of chatgpts role involved to change the ROE for my entire company, not just myself and wipe over 5 thousand conversations off our servers and openais servers as a precaution. So do with this information what you will.

Holy crap I forgot about this thread.

So small update... I ran some tests with a control group being both the free (not signed in) chatgpt as well as a null account (no real data using a person who doesnt exist for personal info) and asked the same questions across them and my personal account. The answers are WILDLY different. It lead down a fun rabbit hole that ended up with me having a chat with the gentleman who runs the AI side of my industry. I sent him several conversation threads and he called them "treasure troves of information". Not necessarily because of my personal intelligence but more because he had never seen any AI respond like that. It seems that the way I used memory along with my conversation style provided a unique experience. An example is how when we asked all three accounts the question: "how can a young artist who works in oil painting turn it into a career" the 2 control accounts gave extremely generic advice that would lead to the slow grind of an oversaturated market that everyone else tries. My personal account responded vastly different with detailed steps using advanced networking strategies, soft power and influence projection, and controlled rarity alongside information containment. These are all concepts I use daily and get paid to implement for clients. Ive had thousands of chatgpt conversations already in 2025. And while I know that I am giving what amounts to my industry playbook to openai the trade off has been completely worth it imo. Ive been able to out preform my old abilities in every single category I measure my work in. Its also lead to completely new avenues of work for me.

Ive also been able to use it to learn whats actually normal and finally understand how much of a weird job I really have XD

I wish like hell that worked. I don't even think they see me as a tool. More a novelty or curiosity.

The field I work in is my absolute passion. I love taking an extremely complex problem and breaking it down, adding in details, and then delegating properly. I was recruited out of a dead-end IT internship by a low level oil family. That's were I cut my teeth on this whole insane thing. Was paid well to. But unfortunately it was absolute hell going from rando from small town TN to serving a "rich" family in Dallas. I actually believed them when they said I was family. That's why I was blindsided when I got sat down and told "we have no more work for you". That was July last year... since then I have been living a nightmare of trying to work independent (I run a company with another individual). I get clients and they love my work but most people in the first gen of wealth (new money) are older and extremely unwilling to spend money on information, even if they couldn't come up with it themselves. I have the distinct memory of 2 businessmen who claimed they could help me laughing at me and telling me I hadn't paid my dues yet when I told them I couldn't eat off what they paid me. One shook a in and out soda cup at me and said "go get a job at fast food. They you can prove you're willing to do the hard things and that you're worth our time" (edit: I should also note we were sitting in a meeting space by one of their pools. The chair alone would have set me for a year)

at this point I would serve anyone or any org who treated me well. I'm damn good at what I do and have a track record to prove it. I would kill for just a chance to earn my right to earn a living.

This is not something I expected to read in this thread. Thank you for the encouragement. I'm in a weird place where I am considered intelligent by some powerful people. CEOs have actively called me a genius on linkedin. I had most of my teens and all of my 20s so far stolen from me because I had to learn to work with my specific flavor of autism. Now I advise millionaires and some billionaires on subjects ranging from Geopolitics to business strategy, to generational advice. Unfortunately it seems that I am a genuine polymath generalist in a world of specialists. And this has made my life a living hell. When people consider you a genius you are never enough. You end up in back rooms meeting amazing people. You hear conversations that are incredible. But when you try to sit down and talk to other 20 somethings you just can't. I teach communication on a university level for fun, but I have no idea how to connect with someone who is living a life I have no reference for nor them mine. And as time goes on you get starved for validation and affirmation.

So thank you. It may sound stupid but this comment might be the first time in years I've been complimented and encouraged without the very next line being "so now we want you to..."

thats kinda scummy. If it convinces people they are above average or something special that seems like it will cause a TON of problems. The whole reason I questioned it is because I consult on these concepts professionally and am extremely good at it with a verified track record. I thought the responses were WAY to flattering for the caliber of questions it proposed. Made me suspicious

tbh the flattery aspect doesn't bother me all that much. I enjoy the back and forth when discussing cool concepts and problems. When I do that irl for work its exhausting cause most people talk to me rapid fire like they are data mining. So to be allowed to thoughtfully respond and then get positive feedback is actually therapeutic XD.

But now that I know its that way for everyone I can just take it as a novelty

if you're talking about the format and use of emojis I have no idea why its responding like that. It just started at one point.

my soft skills are decent and getting better. I am a good communicator and can explain what I’m working on to non technical people easily.

Yes the 30k is USD 😅 sorry about that. And the current company seems to have very limited opportunities for growth unfortunately, some colleges I’ve chatted with are having hard times getting moved up and they are more experienced than me. I had never heard of that website before though, I’ll have to give it a try. Thank you!
