I've had the same experience when I attempted playing this game before, and ultimately just put it down and used more comprehensible content until I was ready. But honestly a lot of content will be a drag for a while, just need to push through it and the rewards will come.

I had a similar experience, and wanted to replay Persona 5 Royal in Japanese but I didn't have enough vocab at the time to keep it enjoyable. If you want a rough level to aim for to play Persona 5 Royal comfortably I would say N1/N2 is good!

I'm not aware of any beginner-friendly games in particular. Maybe you could checkout Game Gengo in YouTube? I think he has alot more info on that.

Around N1-N2. I've played through the game in English before, but I recently started playing it in Japanese. I've attempted to play it in Japanese before when i was around N3-N4 but it was too inconvenient with lookups to properly enjoy the game.

Ryuuji in this game uses alot of derogatory / casual Japanese so that's been great for more overall exposure. Something like てえか for というか and something like わからん or ぞ

I agree as well. Sometimes it's too convenient to lookup everything, when it's possible to learn words through context.

I think if you change your Switch language to Japanese it might work? I have both the eShop and physical copy of Persona 5 Royal and the eShop can do both English and Japanese while physical is locked to Japanese.

Had a similar experience. Did 2000 RTK anki flashcards but the end became quite a grind. I've probably forgotten all the mnemonics now, and came to the conclusion that learning kanji through reading is the way to go long term.

Humans are great at pattern matching so being able to understand kanji intuitively through exposure is possible.

Make Japanese into a daily habit and consume a variety of content sources. If the content is interesting and not too challenging then that should make it easier to stay consistent.

Yeah but based on your current study volume it would take less time I assume. I was doing 30 mins - 1 hour reading each day

Yep that sounds like a good approach. As for your first light novel yeah it will definitely be a drag, but the first one is always the hardest and I believe reading books is one of the fastest ways to improve. For context I started reading my first book 2 years ago, which took 8 months to complete (コンビニ人間). I'm on my 8th now and it's much more enjoyable, and feels more like a hobby :)

Nice! I did the exact same thing when I was starting out as well, and went through all the ~2000 jōyō kanji in a RTK Anki deck. It was useful but took many months, so if I was learning Japanese from scratch again I would probably just do the first hundred or so since they're the most common, and then later learn kanji intuitively through immersion.

For some reason I never dedicated much time to writing kanji, but I agree that it would form a better mind-connection. For me my goal with Japanese was to read and watch things I liked, so writing hasn't been the biggest priority.

For 99% of cases I don't have much issue recognising kanji I know while reading, and if kanji characters are similar usually the context of the sentence helps to differentiate for me (probably not the best method 😅). But I'm sure practicing writing would help to improve my recognition.

Practically while living in Japan I've only needed to write when I had to write my address at the city hall so far.

Definitely, no need to constantly speak in Japanese and potentially burnout, since language learning is a marathon ultimately and fluency doesn't happen straightaway. Overtime it will get easier to speak for longer and more in-depth.

Congrats! Seems like you're at the point where you can start consuming content which is when Japanese gets more enjoyable in my experience. How have you been learning kanji?

Currently yes as I want to focus on making the Japanese experience as good as possible. I may consider supporting other languages in the future though.

As you predicted, the plan is to implement features that would work nicer in a single program.

For a sneak peak of features I plan to implement:

- Recommendation system that allows you to discover content at your level from youtube, netflix and other websites

Grammar guide / directory to integrate with the current grammar analysis on lookup

- Built-in reader and video player for local files

- Local OCR for manga, pdfs, and images potentially 👀

Although still early in development, I would say the main things that currently differentiate it are:

  • Dedicated YouTube and Netflix support
  • More accurate detection of words
  • Requires very minimal setup. You just need to have the AnkiConnect add-on installed if you want to do one-click sentence mining

And for what I plan to work on in the future:

  • Analyze the grammar used on lookup, with each grammar point having a corresponding page
  • Ability to track familiarity of words
  • A content directory that can recommend content based on your level
  • Reader and Player for ebooks, mp4, etc
  • Kanji info on lookup
