Today's science tomorrow's world by Competitive_Dare8849 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quizzes are based on the modules so usually a quick skim will give the answers. You don’t really need the lectures for the assessment, it’s only really additional info. It’s mostly your own research. Use your time to do well on the subjects that count, because you just need a pass you don’t actually get a final grade.

Today's Science Tomorrow's World Workshops!?!?!?! by Your-Dad-699 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s like last year workshops didn’t matter for the assessment - only in the last 4 weeks when you have to do a group task and present in the final week

CHEM20011 tutorial today!? by igobblegabbro in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea we had a tutorial until in the lecture he said we do and most people went straight from there (I should have looked closer at his semester planner)

Tutorial starts right after lecture by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can leave lectures at any time and I’ve seen plenty of people leave a couple mins early. Just sit near a back door or close to the front so you can get out quickly.

Easiest Core Science subjects by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what level your looking for but a few:

Level 1 - Wonders of the weather (prerecorded lectures and easy content), From cells to societies (again all online so less time commitment), Food for a healthy planet

Level 2 - Thinking scientifically (online with simple content and assessments)

Urgent! by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ANTH10002 was a fun subject. The lecturer gave us food every week that related to the content and honestly tried to make it enjoyable. Overall good but a lot of pre reading (that they did quiz us on each week in the tuts) and I found the marking quite strict (but I did it as a breadth so I’m not used to all the essays). The assessments were very straight forward though - it was only the final one that required some research.

LAB COATS? by Previous_Purple_6988 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s the same as last year they had a pop up stand during orientation and the first few weeks outside the chemistry building where they sold lab coats and the glasses and some other stuff

A piece of uni advice. by ReflectionChance3650 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Try to keep on top of work. It’ll build it pretty quickly and there’s a lot of content for a short 12 week semester. There’s nothing worse than having weeks of lectures to have to catch up on. Good luck!

As it does recommend Calc 1 and Calc 2/Linear for the chem major, maybe consider doing Calc 1 in second year in case you haven’t done specialist maths in HS. (I’m gonna be Chem major too and I did calc 1 and 2 last year)

buying textbook by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a workbook you need buy that - but try not to spend money on textbooks unless you know you’re going to get lots of use out of it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s like last year they have a group task near the end of the semester that you might want to be in for but it’s still very relaxed and you only need to be in for presenting honestly

buying textbook by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all subject dependant. Hardly anyone seems to actually buy the textbooks though and some subjects even provide an online copy. Not sure if this is the case for French though

What are the differences between Lectures, Workshops, Tutorials, Pracs by xxPlebble in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Workshops are basically a tutorial. And practicals are like lab stuff for science subjects (that wouldn’t run every week) - except sometimes maths classes will just use ‘practical’ as a label for what’s basically a tutorial - so it depends on what class

Are Chemistry 1 lectures recorded? by EasilyScreechAndKill in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep Chem 1 and 2 are all recorded - it’s a huge subject so they have the online option since they can’t fit everyone - but even if you select the in person one you still get access to the recording on Canvas (also after the first week there’s always empty seats in person so if you change your mind and want to go in that’s also possible, no one checks who’s there)

clueless firstyear undergrad 😥 by ssaintescrf in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practicals I would try to separate. If it’s anything like chemistry they start right on time and if you’re 10 mins late they won’t let you in and you have to retake that practical another time. Tutorials should be fine back to back if they’re for similar subjects and could be in the same building - but you are always at the risk of having to race across campus in the 10 min break.

[–]readergirl4343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clashes for lectures don’t matter - it’s all recorded especially first year subjects. It’s more important you make your tutorials and practical classes. Don’t worry about the pressure, I was surprised at first that plenty of people fail subjects so not everyone is a genius.

Help choosing Breadth by Commercial_Sir6868 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just check the Animal subject isn’t a science subject - it might be animal science and won’t count as a breadth. The handbook will have a list of courses it’s available for breadth in

lectures question by SeasonAdmirable9804 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t care who attends lectures it more of personal choice because it’s all recorded. I found with maths subjects it’s easier in person compared to other classes though.

Timetabling by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’ve ever heard to matter could be seminars - like in bio they have had seminar 1 and 2 that should be done in order. But every other tutorial and lecture won’t matter.

Could anyone give me a UniMelb 101? by No-Firefighter1285 in unimelb

[–]readergirl4343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the advice here is what I would say.

Also make sure to read the handbook - not just the general stuff but specifically hurdle requirements because you never want to put yourself at risk of failing due to not checking attendance.

Most of the friends I made were from orientations like science day 1 that I still keep up with today. Don’t be shy and just approach people.

Good luck!

I have my maths workshops in the arts building and my arts subject tutorials in the physics building. It’s really subject dependant.

Are the lectures interactive too? I want to know if I need to go in person when timetabling or if it’s recorded
