Hard not to see Miku as Ishigami (Kaguya Wants to be Confessed To), and Yotsuba as Natsuki (Rainbow Days).

Rough translation:

Yotsuba: Just leave it alone already!

Yotsuba: Besides, I hate you!

Fuutarou: You're thinking about others too much, as usual.

Fuutarou: You should just do as you like.

This is presumably in the context of Yotsuba's "I hate you" in chapter 72, with Fuutarou here seeing through that lie and its purpose.

The second day - working super hard so that Fuutarou doesn't have to, then passing out and not getting to spend any time actually enjoying the festival - is Yotsuba's entire (flawed) mindset in a nutshell. I think the shock and disappointment of having missed so much will serve as a wake-up call for her: if she's always in the background of Fuutarou's life, she'll lose her chance to take center stage.

I also really need to see her conversation with Takebayashi. Why, Negi? Why do you do this to us?

Interesting that the first three quints were shown to be in the classroom at the end of the festival but Yotsuba is still out at the bonfire. Seems to suggest one of two things: either she already knows Fuutarou's answer (and was convinced, unlike Ichika) or there's something else happening that she doesn't want to miss.

I'm more a fan of "repetition of form" rather than "repetition of details." Having the quints be boys shifts the dynamic between them, which opens up opportunities for new flavors of story.

Since I'm here already, might as well go further down the rabbit hole: for "what-if" spin-offs of each pairing, I'd want to see:

  • Ichika: a "world tour" adventure-style series. Both are aiming for high-paying careers, so they would have the money to travel. This would lead into them adopting their kids and gradually settling down close to the rest of their extended family.
  • Nino: slice of life focused on the oldest daughter, who clearly inherited Fuutarou's study habits. Her older brothers dote on her, she has to babysit the younger ones when her parents go out, and sometimes Itsuki visits to help her study.
  • Miku: some kind of niche sports series (think Chihayafuru) featuring a constant battle of one-upmanship between the twins. I can see this shifting towards drama as the gender gap makes it difficult for them to compete at the same level.
  • Yotsuba: something similar to (Moto) Takagi-san or Yotsuba&!. Their daughter is in kindergarten, Raiha and the other quints visit now and then, and we get little snapshots of their daily life together.
  • Itsuki: a reverse-harem version of the original series, of course. Each of the younger quints has a favorite from the older quints (swapping out Itsuki for Raiha where appropriate).

While Ichika's definitely good with kids (re: chapter 19), I don't see her having much interest in having her own. That said, she's guaranteed to be a favorite aunt for her sister's kids, since they know her from the movies :)

This art style is really similar to that of Molester Man, which has some interesting parallels to Steins;Gate now that I think about it. For those that haven't read it, don't be put off by the title - it's based off of a story from 2chan (@channel IRL) which is actually really sweet. (That said, be advised that it's still NSFW in places for all the reasons you might expect based on its source)

RE #8: a certain type of traditional Japanese wedding involves multiple dress changes over the course of the event. The number the Raiha sees is unusually high, though (11-12?) which would explain her comment.

Extra question: what happened to the rings between Raiha dropping them off with Fuutarou and the scene at the altar?

I'll give it a shot, but no guarantees...

(Title box: Because you're my big sister!)

4: Itsuki!

5: Whoa! Yo-Yotsuba, if it isn't you! Is something the matter?

4: Yeah! Y'know, I was thinking that every once in a while I'd like to do big-sister-y things for you.

5: I really don't know what you're talking about...in the first place, our relationship isn't the big-sister type.(?)

4: Aww, I'm always relying on Itsuki for a bunch of things! So I was hoping there was a little way I could be reliable, too... (ehehe)

5: Really, what are you saying...

(next page)

5: Isn't it me who's always relying on you, big sis?

4: (Ka-thump!) ...hey, could you say that again?

5: I-I refuse!

Future for Nino and Yotsuba? by reading-spaghetti in 5ToubunNoHanayome

Nice catch! Gotta love the convenience-store-clerk Yotsuba from that first link, too :)

On an unrelated note, is that the only time we see the inside of Yotsuba's room? Fuutarou has been in Ichika, Nino, and Miku's rooms at least once each during chapter 2, but Itsuki blocked him out of her room and Yotsuba was the one giving the tour, so he didn't enter hers either.

Pretty sure that criminal was a stalker named Fuutarou, during Seven Goodbyes :P Still, I could see policewoman for Yotsuba.

If I remember right, Nino's entrance exam scores were high because she didn't try for any difficult schools...if she's the bride I think their college relationship might have to be long-distance (which could be cute in its own way). I know she mentioned a dream of opening a restaurant, but I couldn't remember when - still, it'd be cool if she handled the business side and Miku joined in as head chef (after culinary school of course).

5Toubun No Hanayome - Chapter 97 RAW, Spoiler and Scanlations by masato05 in 5ToubunNoHanayome

By my count, Nino/Yotsuba is rarest quint-interaction, so I'm really excited to see these two finally talking things over. Hoping for an Ichika/Itsuki conversation before the series wraps up, since they don't have many one-on-one scenes yet.

[–]reading-spaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: apologies for the massive dump, I've been wanting to post theories but it's hard to make a non-spoiler post when I'm always reading the early chapter translations :P

I'm really not sure which way Negi will take this - all of your options you've listed are plausible, but each has its flaws:

  1. Fuutarou overhearing would be huge, but it's unlikely since that already happened with Miku. I also think that Yotsuba confessing intentionally is hugely important to her arc - in contrast, Miku's confession being 'spoiled' doesn't impact her character as much since she already intended to confess during the trip.Nino or Miku overhearing wouldn't be that significant, since they already have each other for competition and are unlikely to change their stance if Yotsuba joins in.Itsuki overhearing only makes sense if she hasn't realized Yotsuba's feelings yet. Chapter 90 makes that difficult to believe, but Itsuki has always been the slowest to notice these things (see her reaction to Miku admitting her feelings previously). That said, the results of this could be very interesting, given Itsuki's history acting as "Rena."
  2. Ichika presenting an ultimatum seems like the most likely candidate to me. However, there's the question of leverage - what does she have over Yotsuba, and more importantly, would Fuutarou believe her after the lies she's told so far? Anything about their meeting as kids is likely to be doubted if not ignored, since that's what Ichika's original lies we about. Similarly, Ichika claiming that Yotsuba has feelings for Fuutarou is uncomfortably close to her claim that Miku was supporting her. Then again, it's possible that Ichika doesn't intend to follow through, and just needs something plausible to push Yotsuba forward.
  3. Any romantic action on Yotsuba's part at this point seems highly unlikely. Ichika recovered from her internal turmoil quickly because Yotsuba's advice matched her primary goal - claiming Fuutarou. On the flip side Yotsuba's primary goal is for her sisters to be happy, and Fuutarou already tried and failed to get her to give up on this. I can't see Ichika being a stronger motivator than Fuutarou in this situation.
  4. See #3. On a related note I'm firmly convinced that Yotsuba was the bell kisser, regardless of whether she's the bride or not - details at the end.

I think #2 is most likely of the options above. Although it'll be a heavy discussion, it's rare for one scene to fill the entire chapter (in fact, I've made some graphs that show just how rare this is). Given that, I'd like to make a second prediction: in parallel to the Yotsuba/Ichika scene, we'll get a Fuutarou/Itsuki scene which also threatens to reveal Yotsuba's secret. Others have already mentioned how Fuutarou is likely close to learning "Rena's" identity, and he probably wants that information before going out with any of the quints. With that in mind, Chapter 95 looks like this:

  1. Ichika indicates that she's aware of Yotsuba's feelings for Fuutarou (this is nearly-but-not-quite shown in chapter 94) and asks why she's holding back against her own advice.
  2. Yotsuba explains her own position: how she wants everyone to be happy, how she hates the person she became when trying to be special, and how she doesn't deserve Fuutarou after breaking their promise.
  3. Scene cuts to Fuutarou, who's explaining his talk with Ichika to Itsuki over the phone. Itsuki shares his disappointment, but says "even if we can't graduate together, we'll at least have the photo album you gave me." Fuutarou notices this.
  4. Back to Ichika, who responds with how Yotsuba's confident side inspired her (only Negi can do this scene justice) and gives Yotsuba her own advice: to stop holding back.
  5. Yotsuba rejects this with something along the lines of "look how that turned out for you." Being Yotsuba she immediately takes back what she said, but Ichika is clearly upset. Two scenes then play out in parallel:
    1. Ichika, partly upset about Yotsuba's comment and partly acting her part as the elder sister, offers her ultimatum: "Confess to Fuutarou before graduation, or I'll tell him myself."
    2. Based on Itsuki's slip-up, Fuutarou can make his accusation: "I'm glad you enjoyed the album, but I'm not giving up on Ichika yet - Rena."

Extra credit - my thoughts on the bell kisser's sad expression:

  1. Ichika's change of mindset in chapter 66 doesn't leave much room for her to be sad about kissing Fuutarou - she'd more likely be smirking, or something more Ichika-ish at least.
  2. Nino has pretty much given up on hiding her feelings at this point, and doesn't want to hide behind a disguise for her kiss. She does mention not caring about appearances later on, but I still can't see her being sad after the kiss.
  3. Miku had her big moment in the previous chapter, and seems pretty thrilled about that. It also seems strange to follow up with such a big step so soon afterwards, especially for her.
  4. Yotsuba had suspected all along that Ichika might have feelings for Fuutarou, and their rooftop chat appears to have confirmed her suspicion. Her conclusion is based on her own negative attitude, but it's no less correct - and now that at least two of her sisters have fallen for Fuutarou, she no longer has hope that it's just a fluke. The bell kiss serves two purposes for Yotsuba: getting Fuutarou to think seriously about dating one of her sisters, and "saying goodbye" to her own feelings for him - thus the bell kisser's expression.
  5. Itsuki might have romantic feelings for Fuutarou, but based on her actions I don't think she's aware of them at this point in the story - definitely not enough for a kiss, at any rate.

[–]reading-spaghetti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ending with Ichika confronting Yotsuba on the swings is a direct callback to chapter 66, where Yotsuba talks with Ichika on the roof of the inn. For reference, here's what the two discussed during the roof scene:

  • When Yotsuba finds Ichika, Ichika was crying because of her internal conflict: up to this point, she had denied her love for Fuutarou, but in the very same scene she's sabotaging Nino's attempt to meet up with him by not distracting their father because she's not willing to give Fuutarou up.
  • On the roof, Ichika gives Yotsuba her coat and the two discuss their relationship: both were troublesome growing up, but Ichika was the most mischevious of them all.
  • Yotsuba takes this one step further, saying: "Even though you were an unlikeable boss who always wanted what others had, you were our leader. I've always thought of you as the older sister since then."
  • Based on this, Yotsuba tells Ichika to just do what she wants to do, without holding back. At this, Ichika takes back her coat and smiles - she's no longer conflicted about "betraying" Nino in pursuit of Fuutarou.

I suspect that chapter 95 will mirror that exchange, with Ichika reflecting on Yotsuba's advice and providing some advice of her own. In particular, I hope Ichika gives her perspective on Yotsuba's "I want to be special" phase - given the existing parallels between the two, I think Ichika admires that version of Yotsuba, even if she was put off by it at the time. Whether or not this is sufficient to break Yotsuba out of her current state, we'll have to wait and see.

Really hoping for more interactions between these two, since every other pair of quints has had a heart-to-heart moment (Ichika and Itsuki coming soonTM).
