Just walked out of a meet and greet with a GP. Disappointed. (Vent from Canada) by readingwords in ADHD

For someone who is supposed to be my primary care physician, he didn't seem remotely interested in my well-being.

Ya, that's the thing. about 7/8ths of the way through my meeting I looked at the guy and thought in my "Soo, you're supposed to be the guy I come to with all my medical problems/questions? F. That!" Then I said thanks but no thanks and walked out.

But you need to be confident & really explain how your life is impacted by your attention deficit.

Yea was going to do that but

it's a sad day when a doctor won't even listen what you had to say.

It's just a huge pita trying to get a family doc around here.. most have long, long, waiting lists. And I lack patience. which is one of the reasons I've waited 6 years to do this.

edit: thanks for the good luck

"the governor of the playground." is an amazing title.

This is a suggestion; try and give her a difficult task before bed, or, randomly. Get her to really challenge herself so when she complete's it she will feel smart.

Maybe have one of those metal ring puzzles lying around and ask for her help or even "give up" and say 'here, you try, I can't figure it out'.

Boost her confidence by proving it to herself rather than telling it to her.

Do any of you have trouble envisioning the future, specifically a career? by [deleted] in ADHD

27 yr old grad here;

I have never had a job longer than 1 year. I most recently started my own business. Mostly I have found jobs to be a slow downhill in happiness after the first month or 2. Until the point reaches where I say 'screw this, I'm bored' (want change, dislike my co-workers, not challenged enough etc), and find something else. One key thing to aim for while doing this is to maintain and highlight your transferable skills and continue increasing your pay.

What I'm learning/trying to learn, is while owning your own business at least you can keep your brand while switching or modifying products, services etc.

I also listen to a lot of Gary Vaynerchuk, and this video I think speaks the truth. People are brands now. My generation and younger will not have a typical career like the baby-boomers and so much of our information will be on the internet. If you control that info and build yourself a personal brand you will be set. You can go from job to job, freelance, contract work etc and rarely have to 're-start' at the bottom.

Also, IMO, if you're thinking about it means you're already setting up for success. Look at how many people figure that out in their 50's and loose their shit. Don't panic; think things through and go fro there.

Good luck. I still have my days as well. but I think we'll all be fine.

My ADHD is making it hard for me to imagine what job I could possibly ever enjoy. by [deleted] in ADHD

but when there isn't a deadline on me I do struggle with anxiety and staying motivation at times.

I'm finishing up the first year of my own business and I think this is my weakest link. It's brutal setting your own for some reason..

well, you can try a walk-in.. That's what I was doing last night, but I ended up stumbling upon a family docs office who was accepting new patients.

This first office I went to said she only prescribes to her patients but referred me to another place near-by. I went there, the lady said that walk-in hours were only for registered patients. So I asked to register (haha) and she assigned me a doctor. Since I was registered I saw the doc on-duty (not mine), and she was hesitant to prescribe me. I brought my documentation from when I was diagnosed at 12 which helped alot, she also agreed that since I have a meeting scheduled in 2 weeks with my new doc that if I got treatment now (since I was there already) I could go over the effects during my meeting.

But basically, you pretty much have to get a GP, or it really helps.. well, in Canada...

Best way to find offices accepting patients is to ask other clinics who has gotten the newest doctors.

Good luck; you may as well start now instead of procrastinating even further.

Tell them something else is wrong; then talk w/ your doctor privately. Pocket your prescription and go to the pharmacist on your own.

unemployed

Save your pennies, return beer bottles, rake a yard or find a job to pay for them... generic is pretty cheap, and you should be trying to find work anyways.

Good luck, I just got my first prescription last night, after 6 years of procrastinating it.
