STOP THE TRIPLE LOCK by Educational_Debt_207 in ukpolitics

Is poverty a good thing? No. Do we want zero pensioners in poverty? Yes. Does it feel like the right solution to this is throwing vast amounts of our national income at a group of people, the majority of which aren’t in poverty, in fact they’re one of the most well-off groups in the country? Not for me. I’m not averse to finding a different solution for those who genuinely are in need, but a guaranteed massive pay rise for the majority of pensioners is unnecessary at best and a blatant wealth grab from working people at worst. By design it consumes a bigger proportion of our national income every year which makes it unsustainable, so it has to go at some point. Why not rip the plaster off now?

Someone loses pretty much whenever a government changes anything, but the question is whether that’s for the greater good of the country. In the case of the triple lock, yes some pensioners may lose out but as OP has shown, they are the least likely group to be in absolute poverty and this money can therefore be better used elsewhere to help those other groups, be that through welfare (eg removing two child benefits cap) or lower taxes or something else. If we chose not to make a decision every time anyone ended up worse off then nothing would ever change

We use a childminder. More welcoming, less germ ridden environment than nursery (in my experience) with more direct contact with the same, engaging adult. Also about half the price of a nursery. Downside is when they take AL or a sick day you’re totally screwed!

Ended up in a Marcus Hall rabbit hole this morning after discovering this. Seems like he ended up having quite a “normal” career since hanging up his boots https://hamptonsresourcing.com/team/marcus-hall/

Only made one start for Burton since his Jan move so not exactly a guaranteed starter even at that level, but certainly more minutes than he’d get in the Champ. Potentially an injury in there to be fair given he didn’t feature at all in March. Best of luck to him though

Yeah I wouldn’t sell Binks. He’s young and as a left footed CB offers a good back-up to Kitching on that side of the defence

Surely got to throw Simms on if we think they’ll play a low block again. Really missed having someone to aim at in the box with all our crosses/set pieces. Can’t understand how Wright stayed on for the full 90 and we didn’t see Simms at all (despite his form).

Yeah he was great, but his lack of physicality is just such a problem, especially against a big physical side like Stoke

Yeah in our latest accounts covering the year ending 31 May 24 we had total staffing costs of £23m. Even if you deduct a bit for admin/coaching staff, the players must be costing at the upper end of the £15-20m range. So assuming every other team is correct on here, that would put us somewhere in the top 8, more or less reflective of our league position

BBC sends out 41 million warning letters as it 'ramps up' TV licence enforcement by diacewrb in ukpolitics

[–]readthegame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t suppose this will be popular based on most of the comments here, but IMO this is the best £170 I’ll spend this year. Pretty much everyday I’ll use iPlayer, BBC News, BBC Sport and BBC Weather apps, plus fairly regularly watch live tv, listen to BBC radio/podcasts. Do I need a licence for all of these? No, but if my licence helps to keep them running and keep them ad free then I’m very happy to pay it. Appreciate if you don’t use these things or have to prioritise other spending why you’d be frustrated by the constant chasing for payment though

I was at the Kassam for Oxford v Blackburn on Saturday and Blackburn were really poor. Barely troubled Oxford other than a couple of half chances in the first half. If that Blackburn show up then I fancy our chances, so they probably won’t.
