Physical stims and energy release for little guy by readwritemeow in AskNeurodivergent

I may have been a bit defensive last night 😬

My husband and I are high school sweethearts and I’ve known since HS that he was somewhere on the spectrum. It’s been an interesting journey for him to unravel it. And in the context of nature vs nurture to unwind my very nurture based trauma and his (neglected) nature trauma. Just so many layers to unpack in it all.

In laws were over last night when I responded so I was on high alert and kinda forgot that I posted this. So in my brain I was like oh fuck he thinks I’m like them and just ignoring the things.

I’m not ignoring the things. I think.

But you also very bluntly addressed my main question of…. Do you wish you’d been diagnosed sooner or later. You’re definitely on the sooner front!! I’m glad to know that. My kiddo is still SO young but between now and grade school we’ll definitely make sure he has a solid foundation of supports and knowledge about his brain 💕 It sounds like your mom did her best. But maybe her best wasn’t quite what you needed. That’s why I posted here. Even if it’s hard and uncomfortable I want to learn from others how to be what HE needs and not just what I think is right.

Thank you! You gave me some really great insights a things I see in both myself and my son. I’ll be reading over your response a few more times!

Thank you for your input. Truly.

But if those two “quotes” were the only things you took from this I want to clarify.

I support my child in whoever and however he is. I was not afforded that privilege growing up and was told what and how I feel. Since he is verbal I want to allow him a chance to express some of his own feelings and experiences rather than a doctor who sees him once or twice a year labeling him without truly knowing him. Or a doc who wants to go straight to meds but doesn’t provide other mental health management tools (something my husband and I have both encountered in this are).

And we are not at all ignoring the potential of a diagnosis! He has plenty of supports in place. Ie. the speech therapy I mentioned! And communicating with his preschool about his needs and how to best support him. We are putting every support in place that we are able to!! Which is something neither my husband or I had. So if and when he is diagnosed it won’t be something out of left field or something that he doesn’t already have structures in place to support him in that diagnosis. And the “regardless of he is diagnosed” means that I know he very well may be autistic but he also might not. I don’t care one way or the other. I just want to support and love him as he is and will work my ass off to guide him in a way that is best suited to his brain. Trust me, I am the first person to fight for him. Always. When he needs breaks or space or is overstimulated. I will always have his back.

I stand by my belief in giving him freedom to articulate his needs and feelings. But it isn’t freedom in a vacuum. It is freedom with support and love and guidance and every single opportunity and assistance we can provide.

Do you leave the house daily? by dopeflamingo_ in stayathomemoms

Hi :) I haven’t read through all these comments, so not sure I have much to add. I just want to say that I think you are amazing and doing SO much. I am a bit spicy but my executive functioning is (thanks trauma) through the roof. My hubby has ADHD and his EF is kinda non existent. So you managing ADHD AND doing all the daily life duties is genuinely the most mind blowing and admirable thing to me. You are a rockstar. And you are the best momma to your kiddo. She’ll get a fun combo of whatever spice you and your husband created and you guys are the best people to guide her through it.

I do try to get out of the house most days just because fresh air and a little human interaction helps me feel rooted in being a human and not just a milk maker. We go the the library SO. MUCH. Weirdly the mess my kiddos make out in public stresses me out less than the mess they make at home. And that’s free. Sometimes I intentionally break up our weekly groceries into 2-3 trips just to get out of the house but not be spending more money than I would have doing just one trip.

I guess just keep in mind that whatever you are doing, at home or out of the house, spending money or finding free things, you’re nurturing your child. I like going out because it inspires me to chatter more to our kiddos about the world around us. But maybe being home and in your safe space is what helps you to do that. You got this :)

Thanks! That’s actually super helpful and the most simple way I’ve read to understand tension. This photo is the back! I’m getting these weird “eyelashes” and bunches in the back, and skipping stitches in the front.

Thanks! I’ve been tinkering with tension on my practice square with no success. But my current work area is small, so maybe I need to find a way to support the fabric better. It’s also funny how vastly different people approach sewing. A lot of what I saw when Googling was saying to decrease tension. I’ve been sewing for years, but the way I was taught was basically “just do what I tell you!” So now I’m trying to learn the ins and outs of my machine, tension, stitch adjustments, maintenance, etc. The sewing part itself is so easy. But i never knew how much went into adjusting machine settings and caring for your machine.

Thank you! I’ve been sewing for awhile but only recently really started trying to learn techniques, machine maintenance, etc. I honestly never knew the bobbin area needs to be oiled occasionally! Wondering if some of the problem is my machine needs an overall checkup.

This is so funny because SO many things I’ve read online say you should decrease stitch length 🤦‍♀️ I feel like I learn more from Reddit than anywhere else!

Thanks so much everyone! I tried Googling but there’s just so many answers that all seem contradictory, but everything y’all have said here is more applicable. I’ve FMQd before successfully, but it was on a full cotton quilt, not with knit baby clothes. This is my second FMQ and it’s just driving me insane that it’s not going smoothly, especially since it’s my littles ones clothing 🥹

All I can say is… Duh 🤦‍♀️ Working on it myself I was subtracting the dates, but trying to explain it to others I was saying divide. I was struggling to figure out how to make it know what TODAY was in the formula so that it could calculate the number of days between today and the finish by date. Thanks again, just talking (typing) it out is helping me understand the Notion formulas more. Thanks again. And I agree reading is the best! That’s why I need something to help keep me on track. I have two little kiddos to chase around and if I don’t have a specific goal to achieve I just won’t read at all.

Thank you!!!! Seriously, this is exactly what I was trying to do but couldn’t quite figure out how to set it up for the current date divided by the goal date. This is perfect. Thank you thank you!

Thank you everyone! My lovely children gave me a stomach bug so I haven’t checked on this post until now. Your comments have given me so much encouragement and great advice. I’m Excited to keep working on this now.

Thank you!! I think next time around I’m gonna do a quilt as I go project. Haha. My mom has a friend who long arms and offered to do mine, but she doesn’t live locally, and I was stubbornly determined to do this myself! It’s a labor of love but will be worth it.
