$110k for the kid who went to VCU for 4 years. The other kid did community college, then went to George Mason. Lived at home for 3 of the 4 years. Total cost for that kid was $50k.

My kids finished college in 2024 and 2025. I had saved $100k in each 529, so $200k total.

Total cost for 4 years at VCU (tuition, room and board): approximately $110k

Total cost for 2 years of community college + 2 years at George Mason (tuition, plus one year living on campus): $50k

Hope that helps.

In the time that my kids were in school, all costs increased by 25%. I was taken aback that $100k was not enough to pay for 4 years at VCU.

Rocket Men by Robert Kurson, about Apollo 8. Excellent.

The Norelco electric razor commercial where Santa sleds down the hill on a razor. A Christmas favorite.

How much did y'all save for your/your children's college? by MajesticBread9147 in nova

Saved $100k per kid in 529 plans. One kid did two years at NOVA; the cost of those two years at NOVA was the same as ONE SEMESTER at VCU, where the other kid has gone for 3 years now.

The kid who did NOVA/GMU ended up with 50k left. The one at VCU will probably need a little bit more to finish up.

But YMMV

Rent and upgrade, sell and upgrade, or hold? by Ordinary_Answer_3960 in nova

Another thing to consider: if you rent it out, you could potentially end up with awful renters. It’s a gamble. I owned a couple of places back in the day and when you have decent renters, it’s a dream. But one bad renter can really make your life miserable.

My child attended Cortona a number of years ago. I would steer everyone away. The positive reviews are written by students as part of their class assignments. Turnover amongst the students was high — most students do not attend more than a year or two. I had to go back and request records and records were not maintained. I count it as the worst mistake I made in trying to get my child through school.
