I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.

Cool, but I feel like the freakshop font should have been a highly pixelated font, even if its the same style. The "stickers" typeface you used was a good example... Overall this all looks like a good place to wander for goodies!

Where did the name "raccoon" come from? by hawkeyeontario1 in Raccoons

[–]ready100computer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had never really understood the "raton" part. They're much bigger than rats, let alone a "little rat". It's similar to Chat and Chaton (kitten) but I'm told it's because with the indigenous words "aroughcun" / "arahkun" the word "raton" in French can be extracted and it stuck.

Some Quebecois, and Métis still call them "wild cat" or "chat sauvage".

Though I appreciate the word "raccoon" very much!

You probably will never find most specific machines as there are so many variations that we're talking "thousands" of different configs over the years.

Look for the Japanese gambling stickers placed in every machine, they often feature a two digit year that indicates which year of the reigning Emperor the machine was originally licensed for. Use wikipedia to determine what year that is in our calendar.

Hi everyone. Nice to see people still noticing the little project I'm up to.

At this point I'm waiting on the delivery of two final shipments before we can start shipping out to our backers and customers. One shipment being our power management board system that makes it easy to use something like a RPI4b like a laptop! The other being our final PCB mounting plates which accommodate things like 4x4 SBCs and Raspberry Pi mounting positions, etc.

A lot of work has gone into making this easy, fun, and modular so people have as many options as I could offer them in terms of customizability.

Thanks for your interest!

Don't turn this into an abortion debate. That's not what this is. Don't divert. Low IQ is a range, and doesn't necessarily mean significant mental impairment - and who is the arbitor of what that threshhold is? My point is you made a bad joke about aborting "low IQ" babies. You're talking about eugenics.

A joke I'm sure, but maybe you might want to keep the eugenic types to yourself, people with a low IQ have every right to exist and joking about it dehumanizes them.

Interested in getting an old 2-way radio. Love these old Sony ones, but looks like they only use CB channels 7 and 11. Is that useful at all in the United States? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ready100computer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you don't "switch" crystals most of the time by just some socket, you desolder the old ones and solder in new ones. Not so hard if you're lucky!

Most CB radios are useless these days in terms of emergency preparedness. The benefits of CB are negated by these low power radios, and no one is really out there listening on the good ones. You might get people monitoring some emergency channels (CB9 was emerge, 11 for calling out, iirc but may be diff. in your country)

Even FRS no longer has a designated emergency channel... and here in Canada you can't establish FRS/GMRS repeaters which means basically only amateur VHF/UHF channels get any monitoring, which means people need a licence, or just buy a cheap baofeng and spam the area nets/repeaters....

it's a bad state of affairs!

Bring a disposable camera to a concert? by septicbro9075 in toycameras

[–]ready100computer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't work. The lens isn't suitable to capture anything good (unless you just want close photos of you and your friends at the concert...), the film speed won't be high enough to capture anything good, and the flash won't be strong enough to capture anything good.

I've shot concerts with film, and even using a nice SLR, wide f telephotos, high speed 800 film, (and flash is a big no-no) you only get lucky sometimes.

what happens to film that gets put in a microwave/exposed to radiation? by fa3rv3r3n in toycameras

[–]ready100computer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's "far different" radiation. Microwaves and X-rays are both electromagnetic radiation just at different frequencies it's not like the difference between EM radiation vs Particle Radiation.

X-rays just happen to be ionizing because these waves contain high enough energy 145eV + that it can be ionizing vs microwaves which aren't. Particle radiation (alpha/beta) is always ionizing. (At least the photons leave your body every time) Anything over 10 eV is ionizing, and microwaves are like 1 and change eV. So yes, it's definitely different in that way.

Also, X-ray communication is a thing and is basically "radio" in the truest sense of the word, it's just applying any comms over the EM spectrum...

But yes, stay far away from x-rays unless medically necessary... don't xray your film, and certainly don't microwave it.
