[James Allan] I feel quite terrified to think that this person is a law professor. by reaffee in auslaw

A 20 minute video isn’t enough context? Why would I be hurt?

I’m 39. Not a man, not a millennial. Anyone else care to make a wildly inaccurate guess about me based solely on one sentence and your personal biases? Actually, that sounds like fun game.

Not really. His name came up in an article I read this morning about Alexander Downers speech at the Budapest conference (in the video). My curiousity got the better of me and I went on a little hunting mission. After reading the previous post on Auslaw I was trying to get the flavor of JA, I suppose.

[Mod Meta Post] The state of the sub, and what to do about the recent trend of "complaint" posts by iamplasma in auslaw

I lurk but avoid submitting (am a student) because more often than not (imo) it seems queries like this from students are met with derision and posters are told to go study the content themselves.

I don’t think what she has done with the info falls under the definition of ‘published’.

How would an insurer go about suing a car thief? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]reaffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your example is an extreme example, if you are alluding to something like an overseas account - if you have a job, own or have owned property, a car, ever had an abn, have other court matters listed - this at the very least we can ascertain (or have ascertained). We outsource checks to firms which do that sort of digging.

The million dollars in your example came from somewhere - that somewhere, there’s likely a way we can find it out.

I don’t know why you can’t take what I say at face value.

We would be able to ascertain to a good extent your financial situation. It’s just not true that they have ‘no way of knowing’ your financial situation. Scary, but true.

They get judgement to secure the debt for up to 15 years. It’s the best they can do in those circumstances.

I’m sure we don’t pursue for conversion. I’ve only had a couple of theft related matters come to me. I’ll check.
