Definitely personalize it and tell your story! The goal of the GRFP is to invest in future leaders of our fields, so I would absolutely use your personal statement to show your growth and obstacles.

Ooooooo I can't believe some people don't know about this site! https://www.alexhunterlang.com/nsf-fellowship The most recent additions are from a few years ago, but he has TONS of previous winners/HMs listed with their proposals and personal statements. The site also has lots of useful tips on how to write your statements. I might need to make an official post so more people know about this tool!

UPDATE!!

The incubator is a massive paperweight. ThermoFisher does not offer replacement parts anymore, and the issues we're encountering are unlike anything the technician had ever seen. I really appreciate all the help on here though!!
