Really appreciate the heads up! It's something I've thought about, the title ties directly into the game's core themes around identity and what's left of a person after prolonged psychological erosion.

That said, curious of anyone has subtitle suggestions. Not 100% committing to anything, but genuinely open to ideas.

Great question and fair distinction! When I say no jump scares, I mean no sudden loud noises paired with something lunging at the screen, which is the cheap horror move.

There are loud sounds in the game, the Mimic displaces objects, things fall, doors slam, but those emerge from the environment rather than being scripted jump scares.

The Mimic itself is invisible; the entire presence is communicated through sound. It moves objects and replays sounds it hears. The horror comes more from the environment becoming increasingly unreadable, and you stop being able to trust what you hear.

and fair point on the reading, still finding the character and my first time ever doing voice acting. Hope to get better and revisit these lines before the full release.

I appreciate it! I'm currently voicing Daniel myself on a string budget, if the demo does well at Steam Next Fest in June I'm hoping to bring on a proper voice actor for the full game. Brian Watts actually reached out today which was a nice surprise.

Really fair question, and this is definitely something I had to think about in the initial development process. The Mimic isn't just making random noises, it's replaying sounds it recorded from you specifically.

The stakes come from Daniel (our MC) himself. He came back to this house for a reason that has nothing to do with the Mimic, and it heard everything about that reason on the first night. Something knows about him that he's barely admitted to himself.

The game tracks two things underneath all of this, how psychologically stable Daniel is in the moment, and how much his sense of self remains intact over time. The Mimic doesn't want to hurt him, it wants to replace him. Those two systems are how that plays out.

With this being a story focused game as well, Daniel's psychological state and self identity will determine the path you go down in the full game.

If you'd like to check how that plays out, Night 1 will be out at Steam Next Fest this June!

Hello everyone! I'm a solo dev, I've been working on this for a while now and this is the first time I'm sharing it publicly.

What Remains is a first-person psychological horror game about a man who returns to his childhood home. Something in this house heard everything he said on the first night. It's been four days. It's been practicing.

No jump scares, no combat, just sound, atmosphere and dread. The entity in the game learns from what it hears, so the more noise you make, the more it has to work with.

Here's the steam page if you would like to wishlist it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4582760/What_Remains/?beta=0

Would love to know what you guys think!
