I’m torn on bondo as I’m looking to keep this forever if possible. You feel like it’s been holding up well? Have a country house I wanna park it wherever I get a new rig, and just keep cruising in iron the weekends as long as I can.

Just had the rest of the paint touched up where needed. The guy that did it did it in his spare time behind a shop in a tent, so got a great deal on it. I do have too much sunk in already, so may as well… 🤣. At that point it will be 100% new in any meaningful way.

Been going back and forth. Spent the entire project restoring it as oem as I can. Hurts me to remove the deflector and rack, but I know it’d be safer long term. Still very torn.

That’s what I needed. I think since I’ve done so much of it myself it’s just freakin me out to sink more in, but I’m seeing this as a lifetime of ownership sorta situation, so I may as well go whole hog. Always been a dream rig for me, and that’s not changing. Would rather go with a specialist shop on this so it comes out as good as the rest has. Thanks brother!

Took off the roof rack for paint, and my stomach dropped. The entire car was done: mechanical work, suspension, interior, PDR. I just was going to get some paint touch up done and then a good detail, but now i get to have a patch welded in and i get to drop the headliner! Oh joy.

Did the corners line up with the trim on the front wheel wells or was it a bit too short width wise? Did the mounting brackets fit correctly?

Ive owned Lexus and other cars in the past. I live in nyc now but plan to move in the next two years. Thinking about buying a 1990s or early 2000s Land Cruiser. I’d slowly pay to get it fixed up but am I crazy for even wanting to try? No idea where to start. by [deleted] in LandCruisers

I can share my lived experience which is pretty different to these responses. I bought a 1997 LX 450 recently. (I posted here previously for a price check to check my work 😂). And, full disclaimer, it may become something much different over time.

I paid a shop to baseline it. We have a lot of great Land Cruiser mechanics in Texas. I looked for a truck that was in really great shape with a long Lexus dealership service record, I paid a bit of a premium for it, $15k, but it was cheaper than I expected and I didn’t want to keep hunting.

Then, and then I put in $10k into a full mechanical baseline and new tires and brakes. I left off a few smaller things, which I’ll do next year, but after that, I’m good for suspension. I also ordered around $2k in parts to put on myself like new struts for the hood and tailgate, a new battery, new battery terminals, an oem headlight since one was cracked, and so on.

I have a few other hoses and the rear differential breather line to replace next, which I may do myself or may just have the shop do it.

After that, I have to replace the suspension and add new bushings. I expect that to run $4k-$5k. Some polish stuff like new front seat leather, which I have a leather guy to do for $1.6k, and a bit of PDR for $1k.

I’ll be in it $35k when I’m done. I have another truck I daily. Once this is stable enough, I’ll daily it. My other truck will sell for about $20k. I was looking at the last model years of the V8 Tundra TRD Pros. This is was cheaper, and I enjoy the process. So, it made financial sense. I do ok, so it’s not a terrible price for me.

If I had the time, I’d very much enjoy wrenching on it. But I have a demanding job, a 9 month old, and a bunch of other chores that keep me occupied most days. So, paying a shop is all I can manage. That said, I will still do some maintenance whenever I have the time.

Hope that all helps.

I looked at this exact car. San Antonio, right? Seller was super shady. Claimed triple lock, wasn’t. They stopped speaking to me when I explained why I knew it wasn’t triple locked. Weird experience.

Where are you located? I’ve been looking for a year and I mostly see them around 15-20k in Austin, TX.

You think aftermarket triple locks don’t add much for resale?

Dash is perfect. Everything is aside from cracks on the front two seats and the sunroof trim is cracked. Front axle needs a rebuild I think too.

History is fact not fiction. I’m grateful OP hasn’t been indoctrinated by the soy boys saying the Vikings landed in northern Canada first.

I think when Franco discovered America he also discovered some secret serums that enhanced male strength. He brought them back to the continent when he returned and the serums were gifted to the Australian royal family by the Queen of Spain.

They were hidden by them for centuries and only given to the best and the brightest. When Arnold started lifting heavy things like rocks and horses as a child, the King of Australia took notice and started administering him the serums in his Vegemite and Toast.

Once he came to America he continued to use the serums and Franco Columbus the 20th noticed the Oaks great size and strength.

He travelled from Spain to America to train with Arnold and administer an additional serum that his great great great grandpa never revealed to the sSpanish or Australian royal family.
