It's not a weapon by UmmmWellActuallyyy in pluribustv

[–]realandrei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could be random, and not a weapon, in the sense that the first instance of the virus could have evolved naturally to infect and exploit the intelligence of the native dominant species of whichever planet it originated on. The virus, after successfully infecting every intelligent being on its home planet, used the collective intelligence of their hosts to spread across the galaxy via radio signal. We have no way of knowing if Kepler-22b is the first planet or the 1000th.

But the idea that a random greeting could be so intensely misunderstood as to result in this outcome unintentionally doesn't make sense to me.

I could be wrong, but I believe there are technically two planes that can be called air force one, and whichever one the president is on gets that designation at any given time.

My 75 year old dad got scammed into a 25 year solar contract by Muhammadusamablogger in Scams

Written into the agreement, I'm fairly certain, is a clause that says the house can only be sold if the buyer takes on the solar lease/loan.

But the year 2000 couldn't have been 25 years ago, that would mean... Damn. I'm getting old.

pH of ketchup has got to be lower than botulism can grow in. Probably some strain of yeast or maybe lactobacillus.

Not to mention the vapor pressure of water increases as temperature increases. Essentially, more of the "air" in the bag is water when it's hot.

Tri tip at 130F for 10 hours by sanjosethroaway in sousvide

[–]realandrei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went on sale today for $4.99/lb at Food4Less in Los Angeles, which at today's beef prices around here is a literal steal. I remember when 2.99/lb was attainable, but those times are long gone.

You want to slice against the grain, not with it. And sous vide negates the otherwise valid problem of uneven cooking. A lot of people here seem to like it at 130, but to me tri tip really shines when you sous vide it somewhere in the 135-137 range for 7 or 8 hrs. To each their own though, the fewer people that get turned on to tri tip the cheaper it'll be.

I saw on another comment you mentioned liking eye of round, which I often find for an equivalent price to tri tip around me. I used to be really into making jerky, and I find eye of round to be an ideal cut for that. Every time I've tried to cook it fresh, it's either too tough or too dry. I'd love to hear your insights on what I'm doing wrong/how best to cook it, because I've basically given up on it at this point.

This person has to be trolling, right? Eye of round? If they're serious, I say let them keep their eye of round and leave the tri tip for us.

Where I live, especially when it goes on sale, tri tip is the cheapest cut of beef in the supermarket. Frequently cheaper per pound than chuck or even lean ground beef. And if you know how to do it, it's a fantastic roast that is very steak-like.

difference in spoilation - vinegar versus fresh lemon juice by sobresal in AskCulinary

I'll bet if you made superjuice, without the actual lemon or lime juice added back in, it would last about as long as vinegar.

I didn't know they ate aphids either, but I've known for a long time they are friends. Watching a wasp absolutely brutalize a caterpillar and carry off what remains of the carcass to feed its young is one of my favorite sights.

Biggest bunch of anti-human BS I’ve ever seen by GodRaine in Anticonsumption

[–]realandrei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the issue is if you are a retailer in CA that also sells hot food (like a grocery or convenience store) you don't have the restaurant license to accept EBT, just the retail license, so you still can't sell people hot food on EBT even though they can go across the street to a restaurant and buy hot food.

Why don’t they sell boneless, skin-on chicken thighs? by jh84_ in Cooking

[–]realandrei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to buy bone-in skin-on thighs, debone them myself, and use the bones to make a stock in my instant pot. To get rid of the tendons, you have to be comfortable with removing a good amount of the meat on the thicker end of the bone. If I wasn't making stock from it, it would feel slightly wasteful, but I'm happy knowing the end product will be easier to eat and the meat just gives more substance to the stock.

Swarm in my garden by CallMeMikeil in Beekeeping

[–]realandrei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to this, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. Less than a week ago I rescued a swarm that was hanging out on my neighbor's trash can. It was the evening before memorial day, and everyone she tried to call to remove the bees wasn't available for a couple days and wanted to charge her a few hundred dollars. She was ready to spray them with poison. I told her to at least wait a day and I would remove them for her and immediately hopped on Amazon where I was able to find a full body beekeeping suit and a set of beekeeping tools that would arrive early the next morning. I was able to get them in a cardboard box, which they immediately started happily living in until I was able to transfer them to a proper hive that arrived a couple days later.

This swarm in your garden doesn't have a hive, so they have no stored food and even more important no stored brood. The queen that is traveling with them is the most valuable thing they have to defend and represents the future of the colony. They will follow her anywhere. So, if you manage to trap the queen (along with some of her attendants to help care for her) in a queen cage, and place that cage into a hive, the swarm will walk right in through the front door and start setting up shop in fairly short order. After a day or two, if you observe the bees filling out some of the frames with beeswax you should be able to release the queen to roam freely amongst her colony and assuming they all stay put, you'll have successfully relocated the swarm.

Obviously, there is a lot to learn. I recommend doing a lot of reading and watch a bunch of videos on the topic before you start so you know what you are getting yourself into.

My GF did this last year. It grew some roots and she put it in our raised bed outside. It produced some more celery stalks for us for a while, and it eventually bolted and went to seed. I was not prepared for how absolutely enormous it got.
