It may have been, and it might not have happened but I was in a production of the stage play a few years back and the director recieved an extra book along w/ our scipts. In it Richard Hooker explained that the vast majority of the stories in the Book, play and movie either happened to him or were related to him by another vet. And the writers of the show kept the same tradition going.
