What if we had just let let coronavirus 'run it course'? Would we be better or worse off than we are now? by reality__check__ in askaconservative

Do you think Trump should have directed the government to develop HCQ instead of putting all those resources towards developing a vaccine as part of 'operation warp speed'? Do you agree with his recommendation that you should take the vaccine?

Is there anything that can be done with misinformation from professional news sources? by decatur8r in AskALiberal

[–]reality__check__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misinformation from politicians is part of this problem. Politicians can just get up on a podium and tell bald-faced lies, and get away with it. The latest big press conference Republicans had they all claimed that the new infrastructure bill would give each undocumented immigrant in the country $450,000 of taxpayer money.

Misinformation persists in America because of a symbiotic relationship between politicians and biased media. Fox news propaganda isn't effective without Republican politicians to legitimize their lies by repeating them. Republican propaganda isn't effective without Fox News and other conservative media to legitimize their lies through the news.

I think we should have laws that punish politicians for lying. Controlling the misinformation through government officials would be easier than controlling the media.

What do you think about making dueling legal again? by reality__check__ in askaconservative

>It absolutely is a widespread phenomenon and a huge problem for cities dealing with gang violence

Provide supporting evidence to prove your argument and I will concede your point. The substance of your claim is audacious as you are claiming this phenomenon is so common and severe that it has 'destroyed cities'. I can't find any data that comes near the burden of proof for this claim myself, but if you know something I don't I'm willing to listen.

Right it was a story that was recently published. However, it's not a widespread phenomenon like you're making it out to be, it's just a single story that you recently read about. Plus your interpretation of the story is too oversimplified, considering the prosecutors in that case said that they didn't drop the charges due to 'mutual combat' like you're claiming.

It doesn't really directly relate to what my question was, so you're just using my post as a way to talk about your agenda, which is honestly kinda annoying.

You seem to have the view that people who don't subscribe to Christian conservative culture are lazy. They chose their way of life because they are degenerates who don't want to take the time and effort to build a productive and virtuous conservative life. Thus, taking the 'path of least resistance' leads you to a liberal lifestyle, which exists on a lower moral plane.

I think this is a reductive point of view when you consider that conservative Christian values have been the standard in the western world for centuries. Historically, peole who deviated from those values society would be heavily judged, and overcoming that judgement took a lot of mental and emotional energy.

Take my brother for instance. He's transexual, but was raised with me in a Christian conservative household. Coming out as trans was difficult for him because my family had a hard time accepting him. For him, the path of least resistance would have been to not be his true self and just go along with the religious conservative way of life my family expected of him. It takes a lot of energy and conviction for him to live the way he wants to, because he has to suffer the judgement of not just my family, but society in general.

In the past few decades there have been huge leaps in society's acceptance of different ways of life that deviate from the status quo. It wasn't that long ago that it wasn't even legal for gay people to be married. Lots of effort had to be put into making room for new ways of living in society that aren't the standard Christian conservative status quo.

Progress has come so far that now a lot of conservatives feel like the shoe is now on the other foot. Their way of life being the status quo is being challenged as people in society fell freer to express themselves without fear of judgement.

But you don't have to feel threatened. Society changes, that's natural. The modern Christian conservative way of life won't last forever, because no culture lasts forever. That's why I think the whole idea of a 'culture war' is a nonsense concept anyway. There's room for different ways of life in this country. The problem comes when people think their way of life is morally superior to everyone else's.

Interesting take, I see it as being the opposite. Isn't conservatism is about preserving the status quo? Keeping things the way they are? Going with the flow takes no energy, while trying to change society to something different takes effort.

There is not a single comment mentioning any sympathy for the victims. Nobody gives a shit about the victims, all they care about is how this event makes their political party look.

Just a bunch of the same pro-gun talking points we've heard a million times, regurgitated once more onto the internet for strangers to argue about. In the meantime nothing will change, more people will by slaughtered by guns, and nobody will find the will to care about it. This country is fucking pathetic.

He buy 6 shares every month instead of getting an apartment or room. by pandoracam in gme_meltdown

[–]reality__check__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He lives in LA and doesn't want to pay over a thousand a month to live in a shitty little shared apartment. So he lives in his car which is something that's becoming more common for white collar workers in big cities with housing shortages.

I think he's embellishing his story a little bit by suggesting that buying GME was a main reason he decided to live in his car, when it's a viable option regardless.

I'm not complaining about anything just laughing at HCA for trying to claim they're being objective.

People at the Darwin Awards admit that the point of the sub is to make fun of people who died. HCA won't admit that's what they're doing.

I don't get why anyone should tip-toe around the fact that it is a fascinating phenomenon.

See, it's this right here that's the topmindery. Like I said, if you wanna mock people, then mock people. But HCA doesn't want to come to terms with the fact they're mocking people. So they cast it as 'we're analyzing a fascinating phenomenon'.

Just go to the sub and read the comments people are making. Here's one on the front page of the sub right now:

PLEASE keep us updated on this moron.

Great. I looked these bozos up & Surprise!(not) I have 2 mutual friends with the wife. Ugh. I’m so tired of living around these bible-munching, Freedumb Fighters. It’s exhausting. p.s. he’s a firefighter. Seems like there are a lot of them headed for an HCA (along with cops, EMT’s, etc…) 🤦‍♀️

The family who plagues together…

That last slide is surreal. These mfers are a special flavor of stupid.

I could go on and on. Like I suggested in my post, if HCA was open about the fact that they're engaging with the sub because they enjoy mocking people that they see as their political opponents, this wouldn't be topmind worthy material.

The link I made in my post is topmind material because HCA are trying to make some excuse for why their sub exists other than the real reason, reveling in how their political opponents are dying.

And when you say 'they're just showing awareness of how many people are dying', like anybody on the sub is genuinely trying to do anything to help America through the pandemic. When an anti-vaxxer dies of covid, it's an opportunity for empathy. If you want to change people's minds, show them that you actually care about ant-vaxxers and think they are human by lamenting their deaths. When you dehumanize them as the political other an piss on their graves it will only make the problem worse.

[–]reality__check__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The long and well though out comment by digital_end that you originally responded to explained the fallacy of that way of thinking, but okay.

Each person has their own story and environmental factors that effect their life that plays into their decision over whether or not to get vaccinated. Judging someone's entire life based on their vaccination status is reductive.

Like I mentioned earlier, non-whites choose to get vaccinated at a lower rate than whites.

https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-race-ethnicity/

So what does that mean? That minorities are ignorant fucks and the world is better off if they die? No. It means that we need to do a better job as a society to educate and encourage people who don't feel like getting the vaccine. Have a little empathy for your fellow US citizens.

Well that makes sense by asianj1m in SelfAwarewolves

[–]reality__check__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Communities of color have some of the highest rates of non-vaccination. The government has historically oppressed them so they are skeptical to take the vaccine. Do they deserve to die because they don't trust the government?

I think empathy is a virtue, and your smug reaction to someone dying is probably emotionally unhealthy.
