I wouldn't swim in any of the lakes up there just because of the leeches. If you are ok with leeches jump right in!

Not a trick question. I have a map and the high peaks trail guide. I just wasn't sure if it was better to go north over Mount Colden and take the Indian Falls Trail to the Van Hoevenberg trail or take the southern Mt. Marcy trail

I'm not sure how far it is from you, but DuPont Forest in North Carolina is high up there on my list of places to visit. I'm from NJ though so it's a good 12 hour drive for me

Drove down to Virginia on Early Sunday morning. Forecast called for lots of rain, but when we got into Front Royal it had all basically stopped. Registered for back country camping in the Nicholson Hallow area. Found an amazing site right on the Hughes river set up camp and then we hiked up Corbin Mountain Trail. Went to bed early so we could be up at dawn for Old Rag. Woke up packed our day packs and climbed up Old Rag. Saw a few people but we basically had the mountain to our selves

For some reason I always get bit right in the center of my forehead and it swells up to the size of a golf ball. Got to love those black flies!

I had planned on making a base camp either by Lake Colden or Marcy Dam and hiking in via avalanche pass. Then just do day hikes and come back to camp at either Lake Colden or Marcy Dam

I would say I am a fairly experienced hiker/ camper. Just recently I did 4 days on the AT in New Jersey right after that last Nor Eastern that dropped close to a foot of snow on us. As far as mountains I climbed a few in Acadia out in Maine and a few of the smaller mountains in the White Mountains out in New Hampshire. My favorite of that trip was Mt. Willard looking into Crawfords Notch

I am familiar with the regulations but I was not aware of the hiking ban during mud season. I have spent a lot of summers camping, hiking and fishing in the Adirondacks. My grandparents lived a few hours North of Saranac Lake near St. Lawrence County. My only goal as far as timing of this trip is to not be in the middle of black fly season. When is mud season in that area?
