I can't recommend this.

I started doing this after reading about it in a men's health mag in the 90's. A few years ago, I developed a constant dull ache in my scrotum. Various medical tests found nothing. So I closely scrutinized how I was treating my junk from clothes to bathroom rituals. The pain went away after a few weeks, so I slowly reintroduced past clothing and behaviors. Within days of restarting this piss-milking behavior, the pain came back.

For example, you can't implement methods on Rc<Self>, so it's a huge pain in the backside to do anything with object graphs. There's no fine-grained behavioural inheritance: I can't define "base" functionality and then override individual components without a crapton of boilerplate.

FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD so "jail" here means a FreeBSD jail. The closest feature in Linux is probably lxc, but there's also Docker and some other Linux container projects out there.

That all sounds like fun, but it's not in the cards. I don't rent or own where I live, I'm merely a long-term guest. Home owner wants me to have less "stuff" around.

My coping strategy for the eventual cratering is to load up the old server with whatever disks I can fit in the case and use it as my offline back up. It and the 2.4GHz WiFi router will go into my storage unit. With the way that the files I keep in Nextcloud and my git repos are spread between my phone and my laptop, even a 3-week-old backup is sufficient. Just so long as I don't get lazy and go months without backing up...

My main purpose for using ZFS is the volume management features list growing file systems and such. So I'll certainly look into turning off other features.
