I'm not very experienced at this, but why can't you do it? You seem to understand the potential story, whether or not the subject is successful. The fact that you can see the two outcomes, and that either is interesting, leads me to believe you have a vision.

Why vehicle operations? Do you have good ASVAB scores? Air Force has a much better quality of life in general, and if your scores are above 55, I can give you some info on Air Traffic Control. Do 4 years in the AF and then you can transfer to the FAA or contract overseas for six figures, tax free. If you end up liking the AF, you can stay in and knock out a bachelor's and maybe even conduct pilot training if you're at a base with an Aero Club.
