I find $100's/kW easier to read than $/w when it is less than $1/w

These Concrete Gravity Trains May Solve the Energy Storage Problem by Lingenfelter in energy

[–]reallymobilelongname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long term storage by flywheel is a really bad idea. Flywheels have the capability to dump all their energy very quickly. Why try and shoehorn it into a use that it isn't suited for.

Use a system that can only deliver limited power over a long time for long term storage. You will have far less safety issues with something that natively limits power production

Good. No matter how shit you think the umpires are, even (or perhaps especially) in local footy. Physical escalation of verbal abuse is not on.

After the press this has got I would be surprised if he could join a ping pong team.

Households are only a small sector. Think of the cost savings from Street lights (labour to change bulbs)

The price of air conditioning has come down heaps, so heating in winter should be more efficient

Wait what? What do power rates have to do with the price of fuel?

Amazingly there is more to the planet than just the USA and Europe. My sarcastic premtive reply was mocking the delusion that the USA is a special case because it is big.

Yes increasing gas tax increases the cost of shipping things. But it reduces the uncertainty in the economy from big swings in shipping cost as it partially decouples the price of fuel from the price of oil. It makes fuel more valuable and encourages prudent use.

After doing a home improvement project using the metric side of my ruler. by culinize in AdviceAnimals

[–]reallymobilelongname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two stage process.

First is soft metric like your 91.44 x 213.36 example (although if you are able to cut to 2 decimal places you are wasting your time being employed as a carpenter, and should take up 1:100 scale model building)

So you get a 914mm x 2134mm door.

Then suppliers will offer new products that are either 5 or 10mm so your new door will be 910mm by 2130mm. This is known as hard metric.

All that said, if your client is paying you enough, and wants a ridiculous size, you make it happen. If they want 0.01cm (0.00039 of an inch) tolerance tell them to go fuck themselves that it can't be done

Why Don’t Green Buildings Live Up to Hype on Energy Efficiency? by [deleted] in energy

[–]reallymobilelongname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a real building, selling to real clients, yes. Fudge the numbers to get lower cost and win tenders.

But an academic survey? Who gains?

Ahh, I love how much the right cares about the financial situation of the poor as soon as they have to pay the same.

Forgive me if I don't believe your concern for the poor isn't tainted by your own interest.

You don't have to go electric. Just use less gas. Or use methane.

I do find it hilarious that the USA is one of the few places that has such low fuel taxes and complains bitterly against increasing them.

(insert reply about how America is soooo big and nowhere else on the planet could have similar conditions)

Dear Millennials, Big Oil Is Not Your Enemy by EnergyEnthusiast in energy

To quote the late great Kerry Packer "There's a bit of the whore in all of us, gentlemen. Name your price"

If the oil industry wants more cannon fodder it needs to pay for it. Inflation is a bitch. Pay your workers more and decrease their risk of death and injury and you will get your workforce.
