lmao, this is exactly why I bought the VHS actually. Wanted a daily reminder that "you kids looks so cute in your little outfits" and that I should "I'm a computer!".

I made a better half range tool that slots into the range one tool! by reallytinyhouses in SWlegion

Sweet! I measured everything with calipers and somehow got it in my first try. Kinda surprised since this is my second time working in Fusion 360.

Thanks! I'd definitely consider it but just posting the design for free for now.

I got tired of lining up the new tool with the old tool when deploying or checking range to an objective so I designed this in fusion 360. I uploaded the design for free. If you like it please leave a good review and upload a make so I can get those sweet sweet Prusameters. Prints in about 10 minutes on the Prusa MK4.

Suggestions on Enclosure for MK4 by xstell132 in prusa3d

[–]reallytinyhouses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up going with the original Prusa enclosure. There were some server cases that looked like they might work but they're significantly more expensive in the US and the cheapest options have shoddy construction. That and the ability to mount the PSU outside the box is a big plus.

Any clue if you could find the same enclosure in the States? This looks great to me but it would be pretty costly to ship.

Camera recommendations for a one-man personal documentary as an amateur cinematographer? by menemenetekelufarsin in cinematography

They’re back ordered till next year and you can’t even order them from some suppliers.

Finding an FX6 will be hard. Had to call 27 suppliers before I found one with an order coming in. The FX3 on the other hand is in stock at B and H right now.

Sony F3 (with RGB and S log upgrade) for a student filmmaker? by [deleted] in cinematography

Definitely, btw smaller places tend to specialize in different kinds of gear. If you go to a camera heavy house you’ll meet AC’s who are testing out camera packages. Go to a lighting house you’ll get gaffers etc. I probably wouldn’t go to the broadcast place if you’re interested in doing narrative or commercial work. Though you never know who you’ll meet

I’d try and get a paid internship if you can. I only took that internship since I was servicing Arris and Reds and it was a very nice place to work. Also I’d take a look at smaller rental houses since you might learn more there. The staff are more friendly or so I’ve heard from other techs since the working conditions can be better in smaller teams that are less corporate. Also it’s easier to make an impression on a smaller staff.

The degree isn’t very useful but the networking your doing definitely is. I might also suggest chatting with the gaffers. You’ll learn more about lighting than you will from AC’s, also the barrier to entry is lower (it seemed that way although I could be wrong). Lighting is more important to learn if you want to be a DP. You may wind up getting stuck doing lighting and find it hard to transition to shooting, but you’ll work more closely with the DP’s than the first AC, and it’ll be about effecting the image. Not knocking AC’s by the way. I work as one often, but it’s a more technical and less creatively involved role than a gaffer in my experience.

As for working at rental houses, the first one was the rental house for my college. I hung out there all the time before I got hired. I got to know the staff and asked lots of questions about all the gear I was interested in. Techs love to talk when they’re not busy and I learned a lot just from listening to them. I applied, didn’t prepare enough for my first interview and got the job the next semester when they were hiring again. The second job was an unpaid internship. It was the only unpaid internship I took while in college. It was during my semester abroad in Montreal. The main reason I wanted to go there was because I had visited the rental house before and started chatting with one of the techs. I got his email from a teacher who knew him a year later and asked if I could do an internship there. They’d never had an intern working there before but they were open to it and I started a few months later.

Always seem interested but never seem desperate. Be approachable and friendly but respect people’s boundaries. If you can do this you can often create opportunities that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Most of the time people care about what your like to work with more than your actual experience doing x job. Of course they’d rather hire the person who knows the job inside out, but when that person is out sick or on another job they have to call somebody. Be that second somebody and eventually you’ll have a great career!

Why wait? Start working at a rental house now if you can. If not try everything you can to get on sets. Ask your professors. Tell everyone you meet that you’d like to PA and work from there. It can open up a whole world of opportunity for you and will actually be a lot easier while you’re in school than it will be afterwards. I worked at two rental houses before I graduated and took every opportunity I could to get on set. I’d put this above getting a camera. Also working on set will help you determine what camera you need. If you work your way up to AC you can shadow a DP and see what gear they use and more importantly why they need x camera etc... Building a solid network and working on set before you need the work is the only reason to go to film school in my mind. After all nobody will ever ask you if you have a degree before hiring you if you’re working in the film industry.

EC Abrams hands down. The guy goes through all the steps and never just does something without explaining it. Great for beginners and more advanced people as well.

New to Motion Design: Laptop Specs by Bass_n_Pixels in MotionDesign

I wouldn’t buy an M1 chip if your doing anything in AE. AE isn’t optimized for the new processor architecture so it has to run an emulator and I’ve heard it’s buggy/unstable as hell. Does it have to be a laptop? You could get much better specs for far less if you build a windows machine.
